Description Summary The Professional Land Surveyor 1 provides a variety of surveying tasks including topographic surveys, boundary surveys, preparing legal descriptions, mapping, 3D scanning, and more. The person in this position is expected to exercise a strong work ethic, organizational skills, and reliability. A Professional Land Surveyor 1 should demonstrate advanced proficiency with survey fundamentals and be able to quickly learn and apply new survey skills. This person is expected to work well with others, absorb and apply constructive criticism, and seek guidance from more experienced members of the team as necessary. Software Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) - Proficient Market Sector Software - Developing Trimble Business Center Trimble Access CAD processing software Point Cloud extraction software Substantial understanding of field surveying equipment use, care and storage Technical Expertise Performs moderately complex tasks independently Effectively divides projects into individual tasks Leads effort on small projects Conducts quality control of basic deliverables Teamwork Team player, able to follow on large, complex projects and lead a small team on simple tasks, anticipates the needs of other technical disciplines and takes responsibility for their results. Project Delivery Produces the following independently in the field, office or both. Field data including: Clear and concise field notes Basic equipment maintenance checks Topographic data collection Monument field recovery Produces the following under limited direction/oversight from others in the office: Basic boundary resolutions Basic construction calculations Control network planning Point cloud extractions Research of public records Basic construction layout Remote sensing data Understanding Budget and Schedule Strong understanding of scopes, schedules, and budgets. Able to predict and deliver individual tasks within a set level of effort. Able to consistently meet budget and schedule expectations on projects. Assists with budget creation on simple projects. Industry Standards and Regulations Understands and employs applicable industry or client standards such as the following: ALTA surveys Local platting, surveying standards ASPRS BLM cadastral surveys Client Standards Client Interaction Frequent client communications. Resolves issues on small projects. Attends client meetings. Consistently uses situationally appropriate communication tools (e.g., email versus phone versus in person). Other Other duties as assigned. Level of Work/Accountability Performs moderate to advanced levels of professional services. Operates with a moderate level of autonomy. May assist with some assistant project management tasks. Supervisory Duties May be a supervisor: Oversees team operations and the daily workflow of the team Organizes workflow and ensures that employees understand their duties or delegated tasks Recruits and hires new employees Implements training for new hires and identifies training opportunities for current staff Communicates information from leadership to employees and vice versa Monitors employee productivity and provides constructive feedback and coaching Sets goals for performance and deadlines in ways that comply with company's plans and vision and communicates them to employees Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations Decides on reward and promotion based on performance Handles discipline and termination of employees as needed and in accordance with company policy Education and/or Experience Associate's or Bachelor's Degree preferred Years of experience required: 4 years Certificates, Licenses, Registrations PLS required Must have a valid driver's license and a good driving record Mathematical Skills Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to create and interpret graphs and understand statistical analysis. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit. The employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision and ability to adjust focus. Able to cut brush using chain saw or machete. Able to dig with shovel or digging bars, use a jack hammer and sledgehammer, and drive in stakes and rebar (monuments). Able to walk and hike through rough terrain, snow, and ice. Able to routinely lift and carry between 30 and 50 pounds. May need to work at remote sites. Work Environment The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this position. Field work is performed outdoors during year-round weather conditions. Work ranges from high-density urban to extremely remote settings. Individuals must be prepared to adapt quickly from one extreme to the other. In the field: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to moderately loud due to the proximity to construction sites and related equipment. In the office: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Geographical locations are taken into consideration with respect to compensation.
