M&T Bank is seeking a Product Owner II to lead the vision, strategy, and delivery of API products that support scalable transformation efforts across the organization. In this role, you'll own the full lifecycle of API development-from identifying opportunities and defining the product roadmap, to collaborating with engineers and stakeholders to bring scalable, secure, and reusable APIs to life. You'll work closely with your agile team to ensure APIs are designed with both technical integrity and user value in mind, serving a range of internal customers across agile teams, product owners, transformation leaders, and external customers. You'll manage and prioritize the API backlog, translate business needs into actionable stories, and help ensure delivery aligns with M&T's strategic goals.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Build, own and continuously evolve the product vision and roadmap for APIs that enable secure, permissioned data exchange within the bank and with external vendors.
  • Prioritize the API feature backlog(s) based on the overall product vision and strategy to align with business value, customer needs, technical feasibility, and compliance requirements.
  • Translate complex business use cases and user feedback into clear and actionable API product requirements.
  • Work closely with engineering, architecture, and API governance teams to ensure APIs are well-designed, scalable, and secure.
  • Define and maintain acceptance criteria, technical specifications, and user stories in support of moving the team to Acceptance Test-Driven Development (ATDD).
  • Ensure the availability of clear, comprehensive, and developer-friendly API documentation to support integration, testing, and onboarding.
  • Actively participate in Agile ceremonies, including sprint planning, backlog grooming, and retrospectives, to ensure delivery alignment.
  • Represent the voice of internal developers and external partners, ensuring APIs meet real-world integration needs.
  • Collaborate across teams and with other Product Owners to align the customer journey and dependent backlogs in delivering a unified and consistent API experience across the organization.
  • May act on behalf of the Senior Product Owner as required by absence.
  • Stay up to date on industry trends and best practices in API design, security, and lifecycle management
  • Promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
  • Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.
  • Complete other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Required:

Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 6 years' business, analytical, technical and/or product experience, or in lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 10 years' higher education and/or work experience, including a minimum of 6 years' business, analytical, technical and/or product experience

Education and Experience Preferred:
  • Prior experience prioritizing across competing priorities and quickly-changing landscape
  • Prior experience actively seeking out multiple opinions, yet making independent decisions and influencing positive outcomes
  • Understanding of Design Thinking principles
  • Knowledge of product design and development best practices
  • Knowledge of Agile and Lean principles and practices
  • Experience working in partnership with user experience teams on product design
  • Experience developing/managing digital capabilities
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Specific subject matter expertise as required by assigned product

M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $115,703.73 - $192,839.55 Annual (USD). The successful candidate's particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
