SMV Recruiting is actively seeking a Purchasing Lead for our client in Fulton, NY. Our client, a well-established manufacturing company specializing in machine shop operations, is looking for a driven professional to oversee purchasing, manage supply chain activities, and implement cost-saving initiatives. The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of manufacturing experience, with a strong ability to read blueprints and negotiate with vendors. Responsibilities:


  • Manage purchasing activities, including issuing approximately 20+ purchase orders daily and obtaining 20 estimates for materials and services




  • Read and interpret technical blueprints to ensure accurate purchasing of components based on specified dimensions and requirements




  • Source and negotiate with vendors to secure competitive pricing and establish new supplier relationships




  • Implement and maintain a supplier quality program to enhance vendor performance and material reliability




  • Track spending metrics, drive cost-saving initiatives and manage both direct and indirect purchases




  • Collaborate with production teams, attend production meetings twice weekly, and act as a liaison between departments to resolve purchasing conflicts




  • Handle RFQs from customers, obtain multiple vendor quotes, and ensure timely material delivery to support production schedules



  • Proven ability to read and interpret technical blueprints, with a strong understanding of dimensions and diameters


  • Potentially supervise a material handler, depending on experience





Requirements:


  • 5+ years of purchasing experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably in a machine shop



  • Proven ability to read and interpret technical blueprints, with a strong understanding of dimensions and diameters is required

  • No degree required; candidates from 2-year technical programs (e.g., OCC or BOCES) are preferred


  • Experience with supply chain management, vendor negotiations, and quoting/purchasing materials




  • Proficient in ERP systems (PLEX preferred) and Microsoft 365 for data entry and reporting




  • Strong strategic thinking, flexibility, and initiative to improve processes and drive cost reductions




  • Ability to manage high-volume tasks, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines
