Position Overview

This position performs daily clerical duties under direct supervision of the Office Manager. Grade 18
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs clerical duties under direct supervision of the Office Manager.
  • Answer the phones, take down inspections, and pulls inspections from office software systems.
  • Processes all building permits submitted, including reviewing permits and processing certificates of occupancy.
  • Processes Land Development Permits, Floodplain Permits, and Erosion Control Permits for all of Jackson County.
  • Maintains office inventory.
  • Records finance information to send to direct supervisor.
  • Manages, retains, and purges files as necessary in accordance with the state retention schedule.
  • Maintains file storage for C/O's, inactive permits, and commercial plans.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.
Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent; one (1) year directly related experience in an office setting with computer operations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses or Certifications:
Possession of a valid, State of North Carolina driver's license to operate a motor vehicle. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment. Must possess or willing to obtain Notary Public.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of County and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
  • Skill in utilizing small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
  • Skill in using computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes.
  • Skill in providing excellent customer service.
  • Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with management, employees, members of the general public and other groups involved in the activities of the County as they relate to the department.
