The Office of Information Technology at the Dell Medical School is looking for a Principal Solution Architect.

Under the direction of the CTO, this position is a strategic leader for the technology department and the broader University of Texas Medical Center, anchored by the Dell Medical School organization, facilitating the overall solution architecture, design and implementation of platforms and capabilities to meet the needs of a new Academic Medical Center.

Key to the role is the ability to translate vision into tangible roadmaps and drive subsequent action by building the right coalition across the institution. Assignments will run the spectrum of education, research, clinical, administrative, digital, IT transformation, and hospital build, with the ability to effectively lead changes to accomplish both short-term and long-term objectives. Of special importance are the multi-year EHR, ERP, Digital and IT transformation programs, both individually and together.

The Principal Solution Architect with work directly with the leadership and staff throughout the technology organization as well as with research and clinical leaders. Collaboration with UT Austin main campus IT, UT System, and other healthcare organizations across UT is a key part of this role. Occasional travel to UT locations can be expected.

The right candidate is a continuous learner, has architecture and platform leadership experience from complex environments, and is accomplished in managing architecture activities across multiple large transformation programs. Independent stakeholder management and coalition building is expected, enabled by great communication skills.

Core architecture tradecraft deliverables, the creation of which the Principal Solution Architect will lead, include:
  • Tangible architecture principles to be followed by the rest of the technology organization, associated escalation model for the (few) cases where agreement cannot be achieved on the ground in a project.
  • Architecture and technology roadmap as the tangible embodiment of our platform milestone roadmap.
  • Current and complete technology solution catalog (including all UT Medical Center sourced, main campus sourced and research team sourced solutions)
  • Mapping and triaging all current technology solutions against our platform landscape, creating a roadmap for what to phase out and when.
  • Informed triage of new technology requests, including vendor technology evaluations and platform strategy fit.
  • Standards and templates for solution and integration architecture designs.
  • Solution and integration architecture designs for the EHR, ERP, Digital and IT transformation initiatives.
  • Solution architectures and technology designs to serve human health research needs across the institution.
  • Security and privacy architecture for our overall platform landscape.
  • Executive level presentation materials to story-tell roadmap and platform topics.
Rightsizing time and effort spent on various activities is necessary, keeping in mind our 5-year timeframe for successfully completing multiple large interdependent technology and business transformations.

Purpose

The Principal Solution Architect will lead requirements development activities, drive technology portfolio cataloging and optimization, translate business requirements into technical solutions, deliver global and local solution designs for key initiatives, and provide architectural oversight of project execution.

Responsibilities
  • Deep understanding of leading technologies and how they work together. Fluent in all aspects of technology used in healthcare with a demonstrated ability to assess multiple factors in formulating recommendations, factors such as usability, performance, reliability, cost effectiveness, cybersecurity, integration.
  • Part of the core team defining the overall technology roadmap. Lead transition and transformation by developing technical designs that meet the needs of the business, as well as usability, performance, cost, cybersecurity, and integration requirements. Regularly conducts research and evaluation of current technology trends and industry practices to inform strategy and works with Business Development on related opportunities. Ability to communicate technical information effectively with business, clinical, technical, and executive audiences. Ability to clearly articulate trade-offs and rationale for recommendations.
  • Comfortable working with staff at all levels of the organization. Work style of collaboration balanced with the need to execute and complete priority work.
  • Business-driven, people-focused, with exceptional influencing and storytelling skills; excellent organizational, multi-tasking, presentation, and time-management skills; strong verbal and written communication skills. Serves as a role model and mentor for staff. Takes accountability for individual and group responsibilities.
  • Experienced in establishing credibility, obtaining buy-in and leading multidisciplinary teams to achieve the technical strategy working in a fast-paced and matrixed environment partnering with senior business leaders. Proven track record of delivering integrated solutions in complex environments with multiple delivery teams. Proven ability to lead teams, develop effective relationships, and drive change. Escalates appropriately.
  • Ability to develop and foster strategic partnerships with technology vendors, startups, and industry leaders that will enable and accelerate the overall strategy.
  • Data driven in decision making and continuous improvement of services. Strong analytic and problem-solving skills in area of responsibility.
  • Sound business and financial acumen and understanding. Contributes to vendor management and contract negotiations in partnership with operational owners.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor policies, procedures and standards in collaboration with other Technology and Risk Management leaders to ensure policies, procedures and standards are aligned and effective across the organization. Provides leadership in Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery planning.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems or a related field and 10 years of related experience including previous experience as a Principal Solution Architect, or similar architecture role. Leadership gravitas. Prior experience developing and developing and overseeing solution architecture and/or at-scale design for an enterprise. Broad knowledge of technology trends and robust technology industry understanding. Robust understanding of cyber threats, cohesive and effective mitigation strategies through architecture and design. Experience in vendor relationship management. Experience leading IT transformational initiatives in complex environments. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in related field. Experience in hospital, medical education, research, or related fields of healthcare. New facility technology-related technical design and implementation experience. Experience with developing and managing strategic partnerships.
