Our client isseeking an experienced Engineering Office Leader to spearhead our operations in Birmingham, Alabama. This essential role will oversee the structural, aviation, roadway/transit, and civil divisions, driving growth and ensuring operational excellence. You will be responsible for the strategic direction of the Birmingham office, encompassing business development, marketing, and strategic planning. This leader will implement strategic initiatives, foster a collaborative environment, and work closely with various practices and services to enhance business operations, guaranteeing quality, efficiency, and exceptional client satisfaction. You will also lead and mentor office staff, coordinating seamlessly with regional office leaders and our corporate headquarters.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Client Relationship Management: Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with existing clients and actively pursue new business opportunities, particularly within city, state, and municipal sectors. Serve as the primary liaison with clients, addressing project inquiries and ensuring their needs are met.
  • Financial Oversight: Monitor and manage work-in-process, billings, and accounts receivable, proactively addressing collection efforts. Develop and manage the office budget, forecasting administrative, staffing, and facility needs.
  • Quality Assurance & Project Management: Review and ensure the highest professional standards and compliance with company standards in all design and production work. Oversee project timelines and budgets, ensuring on-time and within-budget delivery.
  • Strategic Planning & Marketing: Coordinate and execute marketing and financial objectives and policies set by the Board of Directors. Develop and implement strategic plans to drive office growth and market penetration, with a focus on expanding our presence in city, state, and municipal projects.
  • Resource Management: Coordinate manpower assignments with the main office, ensuring timely forecasting of project needs.
  • Team Leadership & Development: Lead, mentor, and supervise office staff, including interviewing, hiring, training, performance appraisals, and disciplinary actions. Foster a positive and productive work environment.
  • Professional Engineering Duties: Maintain professional licensure in Alabama and oversee the production of construction documents, facility studies, and engineering reports. Seal and sign construction documents as required.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with executive leadership, practice leaders, and regional/office leaders to drive growth and success for our Alabama staff and their respective clients, with a particular emphasis on serving city, state, and municipal clients.

Nonessential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in civil engineering, including supervisory, project management, and business development responsibilities.
  • Experience with city, state, and municipal projects, including infrastructure design, permitting, and project management.

Preferred Experience:

  • Thorough understanding of transportation market design and construction processes, regulatory requirements, and business practices.
  • Established client and industry relationships, particularly with public agencies involved in large capital programs.
  • Experience with ALDOT procurement and project delivery processes.
  • Advanced Degree in Engineering or a related field.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey technical information to diverse audiences, including business stakeholders and executive leadership.
  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with executive leadership, practice leaders, and regional/office leaders.
  • Strong financial acumen.
  • Strong business development skills.
