We are seeking a Practicing Medical Director to provide both clinical leadership and direct patient care within a licensed Mental Health Rehabilitation Center (MHRC). This hybrid position consists of 16 hours per week of administrative medical director responsibilities for the 97-bed facility and 16 hours of direct patient care, overseeing a 24-bed unit. Patient stays fluctuate in duration, currently averaging 60 to 90 days, depending on clinical need and discharge readiness.

This position requires on-site presence every Monday for meetings. Additional on-site time will be necessary to fulfill clinical duties, with the specific schedule dependent on patient caseload. Remaining hours may be completed remotely or on-site, depending on operational needs and clinical requirements.

Job Details

Key Responsibilities:
Administrative (50%)
  • Provide leadership, oversight, and clinical guidance to the team of Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and MDs for the MHRC.
  • Attend and lead on-site leadership and county meetings on Mondays, collaborating with nursing, behavioral health, and administrative teams.
  • Support medical staff through supervision, mentorship, provider scheduling, and performance management.
  • Oversee compliance with MHRC regulations, documentation standards, and utilization review processes.
  • Contribute to policy development, clinical protocols, and continuous quality improvement initiatives

Clinical (50%)
  • Provide direct psychiatric care to residents on in your assigned unit, managing a caseload within the 24-bed capacity.
  • Conduct psychiatric assessments, medication management, and treatment planning in coordination with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Ensure high standards of documentation and care aligned with MHRC licensing, Medi-Cal standards (if applicable), and facility protocols.


Qualifications:
  • MD or DO with active, unrestricted medical license in California - or the ability to secure one.
  • Board-certified in Psychiatry
  • Minimum of 2 years of medical leadership experience (e.g., Medical Director, Associate Medical Director)
  • DEA certification and credentialing eligibility
  • Familiarity with MHRC or sub-acute mental health models preferred
  • Strong leadership, communication, and team collaboration skills


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in MHRC, inpatient psychiatric, sub-acute, or forensic mental health settings
  • Knowledge of CMS, Joint Commission, or state licensing requirements for mental health facilities
  • EMR proficiency
  • Experience leading interdisciplinary teams and contributing to regulatory site visits or audits


Schedule & Work Model:
  • 32 hours per week total (16 hours admin + 16 hours clinical)
  • On-site presence required Mondays for meetings and patient rounds
  • Hybrid flexibility for non-clinical hours (remote options available)
  • Some flexibility required for urgent matters or provider coverage
