An exciting opportunity has opened up for a Power Analyst with strong quantitative skills and an analytical mindset, ideally suited for someone with ambitions to grow into a trading role. This role will play a critical part in supporting energy trading activities, analyzing power markets, optimizing assets, and contributing to trading strategies across wholesale electricity markets.
Responsibilities
Market Analysis & Forecasting
- Analyze supply/demand fundamentals, congestion, weather patterns, and regulatory changes in power markets.
- Build and maintain models to forecast electricity prices and load demand.
- Monitor Real Time market conditions and assess their trading implications.
Quantitative Modeling & Data Analytics
- Handle large datasets to identify patterns and trading opportunities.
- Develop and refine models using statistics, optimization, and machine learning.
- Work alongside data engineers to ensure clean and reliable data streams.
Trading Support & Strategy Development
- Support traders in trade execution, position management, and portfolio optimization.
- Track market pricing, bidding behavior, and power flows across ISO/RTO markets (eg, ERCOT, PJM, MISO, SPP, CAISO).
- Translate analytical insights into actionable trading strategies.
- Collaborate with risk management to assess exposures and mitigate risks.
Reporting & Communication
- Produce reports on market trends, strategy performance, and risk metrics.
- Present analysis and insights to senior stakeholders and trading teams.
- Stay current with industry news, regulatory shifts, and emerging trends.
Education & Technical Background
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in a quantitative discipline (Economics, Finance, Engineering, Data Science, etc.).
- Proficiency in Python, R, SQL, MATLAB, or similar languages.
- Familiarity with data visualization tools (eg, Power BI, Tableau).
- Knowledge of statistical modeling, predictive analytics, and optimization.
Energy Market Knowledge
- Understanding of ISO/RTO markets (ERCOT, PJM, SPP, MISO, CAISO, NYISO).
- Basic familiarity with power generation, transmission, and load forecasting.
Trading & Risk Acumen
- Exposure to energy trading, derivatives, or risk management.
- Ability to interpret price curves, bid strategies, and market data.
Soft Skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving ability.
- Comfortable working in high-pressure, fast-paced environments.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
This role is based in downtown Houston and they work on a hybrid model. Compensation offered is in the region of $150,000-$200,000 with additional bonus compensation dependent on company performance.
