Cedarville University is seeking a Digital Pres - Pre-Press Operator who is responsible for preparing customer files for processing and printing according to desired specifications. The ideal candidate te must be proficient in Adobe Creative suite and have the ability to prioritize work assignments based on deadlines, overall workload, machine capability, and client needs. This is a full time (2080 annual hours), non-exempt position that reports to the Production Print Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:PREPRESS: - Utilizes Adobe Creative Suite and other proprietary software programs to prepare files for the production process.
- Ensures jobs meet quality and color specifications as outlined by the client. Troubleshoots and fixes file issues, including alignment, color, exposure, clarity, grain, and other image and typography problems, as well as manipulating for bleed and binding.
- Generates proof for client review and uses approved proof as a guide for print production.
- Ensures that all supplies needed for the client's job are in stock. Works with the Director to acquire necessary materials as needed.
- Communicates with automation specialist on list matching, Endicia requirements, and other job-specific criteria to ensure accurate and appropriate USPS regulations and client requirements are met.
PRODUCTION:- Thoroughly inspects produced materials for quality in both print and finishing. Verifies all variable data items are appropriately placed in artwork and all fields are pulling correct data.
- Produces laser engraved and wide format signage. Works with the campus store and other departments to produce promo goods and campus signage as required.
- Continuously monitors product throughout a job to ensure consistent quality.
- Ensures that job ticket statuses are regularly updated in Print Shop software as a job moves through various stages. Ensures that calculations on the job ticket are correct for accounting and that all work types are accurately charged.
- Finishing of jobs as required including laminating, various bindery, trimming, folding, mounting, shrink-wrapping, etc.
- Troubleshoots computers, equipment, and software to achieve desired results.
- Places service calls on the print center, office copier, and other campus printing equipment. Communicate service needs clearly with the vendor's service department. Ensures customers are kept up to date on the status of equipment.
- Replace customer-replaceable parts on digital presses and properly maintain other equipment as needed. Ensures that Cedarprint stations used for student printing are stocked and maintained appropriately.
- Editing of documents for best product results when required.
QUALIFICATIONS: - Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite. 2-year degree in graphic design is preferred, will consider prior experience.
- Knowledge of design, color theory, and typography.
- Excellent communication skills. Ability to understand written instructions and comfortable following up with clients for clarification on job tickets.
- Excellent troubleshooting skills for file printing and equipment issues.
- Excellent computer skills including a working knowledge of sending and receiving e-mail with file attachments and use of Microsoft Office products.
- Ability to learn and interact with print shop software for accurate job estimating and pricing.
- Must be able to determine the best workflow for processing jobs for optimum computer and press performance.
- Ability to operate various equipment including a cash register, credit card equipment, computers, high-speed printers, digital presses, wide format equipment, laminators and various finishing equipment.
REQUIRED MENTAL/PHYSICAL ABILITIES: - Enjoys an environment where learning new software and new processes is regularly required.
- Must be able to maintain good customer service in a busy environment with frequent interruptions.
- Ability to prioritize projects and be flexible.
- Able to read and understand job tickets for accurate completion of print jobs.
- Maintain copiers and presses, add paper, toner, ink, staples, and clear paper jams.
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality of documents.
- Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to carry large stacks of completed documents from one place to another.
- Ability to distinguish light and dark (grayscale) as well as colors, ability to visually distinguish good quality in printing as well as good placement on the page.
- The ability to stand/walk for long periods of time.
- Must be able to bend and pull.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS: - Work is in a production print environment. Machinery requires use of ink, toner, cleaning solvents etc.
- Some machinery requires the use of hearing protection.
- Employee may need to walk throughout campus in inclement weather to assist customers with copier issues or to make deliveries.
