- Basic knowledge of operations and procedures for handling and processing evidence preferred
- Ability to work weekdays from 7:00am until 3:00pm with occasional overtime. Not a work from home position.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to carry out instructions orally and in writing required
- Strong organizational skills
- Proven computer and applicable software skills required
Primary Purpose: The Evidence Technician will perform a wide variety of specialized law enforcement support duties related to receiving, storing, disposing and releasing of property and evidence collected by law enforcement staff. This incumbent with direct supervision will collect, package and process all items taken into custody daily while tracking and creating disposition and process forms.
Major Duties and Responsibilities: - Obtain and maintain certification in evidence handling procedures best practices
- Collect, package and process all items taken into custody as evidence while creating a records tracking management system
- Maintain evidence tracking system to reflect chain of custody for each item while ensuring evidence room integrity and security.
- Prepare property disposition forms for officer notification and conduct follow-up as necessary; dispose of all items approved for destruction and move property to a pre-disposal storage area
- Research older case files to determine appropriate disposition complying with all laws and policies regarding property disposal
- Prepare, check out and release evidence to appropriate people; run reports to audit status of evidence in officer's possession
- Track property on-loan and checked out to the lab or District Attorney's Office
- Identify property and evidence ready for auction or donation; coordinate appropriate dispositions of items with auction vendors
- Conduct routine inventory and audits of all items in the property and evidence room
- Prepare, process and facilitate all narcotics and weapons booked for destruction
- Properly track, document and report all destroyed firearms and narcotics ensuring compliance with current law and policy
- Assist Command Staff and Patrol Supervisors concerning case files to be sent to District Attorney's Office
- Prepare and send notification to owners of property to be returned
- Assist the general public regarding requests and inquiries concerning the release of property
- Deliver, pick-up and track evidence taken to lab or other testing facility
- Identify solid and liquid evidence believed to be illegal narcotics
- Perform other duties as assigned
Working Conditions: Work is subject to frequent interruptions, requiring skillful prioritizing. Work involves exposure to normal, everyday risks involved in police-related centers. Evidence room work related activities will include frequent handling and testing of narcotics and illegal substances, both solid and liquid. Incumbent will be required to wear personal protective equipment which may include gloves, goggles, face mask and/or other equipment. Incumbent must be able to maintain dexterity in performing all functions. Some activities are subject to completion within strict timelines, and involve potential stress associated with time-sensitive completion of tasks. Work involves frequent standing, lifting, sorting, bending and reaching overhead. Incumbent must be able to document all tasks in the department record management system.
