Responsible for the instruction of students in basic, advanced and specialized law enforcement classes, courses, seminars and workshops at the NOPD Training Academy and satellite training sites.
  • Utilizes diverse instructional methodologies based upon proven adult learning principles while presenting and incorporating classroom and practical, scenario-based performance outcome training programs.
  • Continuously researches, develops and evaluates basic, advanced and specialized training for NOPD Officers, as well as other local, state and federal law enforcement officers.
  • Researches, develops and evaluates practical application training exercises.
  • Initiates curriculum content changes based upon law statute changes, court decisions and/or research of best practices.
  • Develops defensible test items and evaluation matrixes to be used for academic and practical application assessment in law enforcement training.
  • Attends advanced training classes, courses, seminars and workshops nationally to stay abreast of the latest information, techniques, methods and strategies of contemporary law enforcement operations related to assigned fields of police instruction.
  • Maintains a general knowledge of all areas of law enforcement to provide assistance to other instructors in the presentation of their assigned areas of instruction.
  • Provides law enforcement students with academic counseling services, student evaluations and performs other duties normally associated with the instructional profession.
  • Recruits, trains and schedules law enforcement officers from NOPD, other local, state and federal law enforcement agencies and other qualified instructors to assist with training.
  • Testifies in local, state and federal court when subpoenaed by court authority.
  • And related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications

1) A valid driver's license.
2) A Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university.
3) Six (6) years law enforcement experience, which may include experience as a law enforcement officer, special agent, criminal prosecutor, or subject matter expert working directly with or for a law enforcement agency in a support role. NOPD will verify that applicants were in good standing at the time of separation (if applicable).
4) Four (4) years of experience in the practical application of Constitutional and/or Criminal Law for Law Enforcement Officers.

This position requires the physical ability to perform law enforcement training related tasks and exercises.

Prior to appointment, the hiring agency is required to verify qualifying certification, license and education credentials claimed by the applicant to qualify for this classification. If selected for hire, applicants must provide original documents of their qualifying credentials to the hiring agency prior to their start date in this job classification

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Louisiana POST Instructor Certification (Obtained through LA POST Instructor Development School).
  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in adult education or an academic discipline related to law enforcement from an accredited college or university.
  • Significant knowledge of Procedural Justice and Community Policing/ Problem-Solving Principles.
  • Two (2) years of curriculum development experience.
  • Experience in adult instruction, lecturing, or presenting informational material in a classroom-style environment.
This position requires a one (1) year probationary period.

NOTE: Employees in this position will be required to attend and pass the LA POST Instructor Development Course or Louisiana POST approved equivalent as a condition of their probationary period. Failure to meet this requirement during the probationary period will result in removal from this job classification.
Kind of Examination

A rating of training and experience, weighted 100%. All related previous experience will be considered for qualification purposes, however credit on the rating of training and experience will only be given for experience gained within the last ten (10) years.
A background investigation will be conducted.
