Position Purpose: The Plumber/HVAC Technician II performs installation, repairs, and preventative maintenance services for the College's plumbing/HVAC systems. The Plumber/HVAC Technician II exercises a level of skill in the trade and assumes responsibility for routine plumbing service calls, preventive maintenance, repairs, and installations. Learns from and assists with more complex assignments under supervision of senior technicians.

Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp: High School plus 5+ years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in the plumbing or HVAC trades, or the equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license and be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle policy
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of domestic hot and cold water systems, drainage systems, hot water/chilled water systems, steam heating systems, vacuum systems, air pressure, VAV air, and exhaust air systems.
  • Is well versed in using common trade hand and power tools. Is skilled in use with specialty tools such as torches, threaders, flare, mechanical press. Demonstrated ability to use multimeter, temperature gun and similar electronic testing equipment to diagnose problems.
  • Working knowledge of trade products including solder pipe joints, mechanical joints (flare, compression, press, thread), pipe types, brazing joints, high purity piping systems, chemical resistant drainage systems, duct distribution systems including fire and smoke dampers, filter racks, end terminals, etc. .
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work independently under minimal supervision, exercising sound judgment and applying strong problem-solving skills.
  • Strong customer service skills and good communications skills; ability to communicate work to be performed with college employees and building occupants.
  • Computer skills on laptop, tablet and/or smartphone including basic word processing, spreadsheets and ability to use building system programs and work control system.
  • Ability to participate and contribute to projects involving a high degree of complexity. Ability to analyze and evaluate issues and develop creating responsive solutions.
  • Ability to document and record issues and procedures.
  • Ability to perform demanding physical activity, work at heights and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity under physically difficult and/or strenuous conditions.
  • Is capable of participating in the College's respiratory protection program and of responding to alarms including potentially hazardous environments.
  • Willingness to work overtime when required.
  • Willingness to obtain further (vendor) training which may be online, local in-person, or at a remote location.
Must have successfully completed the following training prior to performing work to which the training relates:
  • Driver Safety- Electrical Safety related work practices
  • Lock-out/tag-out
  • Respirator training
  • Fit and Physical Examination
  • Fall Protection
  • Working in confined spaces
  • Laboratory safety/hazardous waste management training
  • Asbestos awareness training
  • Bloodborne pathogen training


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Thorough understanding of plumbing/HVAC piping systems
  • Ability to plan/install plumbing/HVAC piping per codes and applicable trade practices.

Description: Responsibilities
  • In response to plumbing service calls, working independently or with peers, determines root cause and make repairs. For example, clears drain lines, repairs leaks in pipes and joints, diagnoses cause of banging pipes (often improper pipe pitch), inspects, diagnoses and repairs steam traps, responds to hot/cold calls, troubleshoots and repairs heating/cooling components (i.e. pumps).
  • Performs installations such as replaces plumbing fixtures such as faucets, sinks, toilets, flushometers, hot water heaters, replaces automatic and manual valves.
  • Advises supervisor of materials/services required for repairs.
  • In response to assigned work orders, working independently or with peers, completes scheduled preventative maintenance tasks on College plumbing and HVAC systems. For example, replaces air and water filters, cleans coils, blow-down systems, reads gauges, replaces belts, services water pumps including pump coupling replacement and motor replacement. Provides steam trap, valve, coil and other component maintenance. Displays understanding of equipment operation.
  • Develops an understanding of how to read blueprints.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of building codes, specifically the Plumbing & Mechanical Codes. Uses college data sources for access to building plans and OM manuals.
  • Assists with installation of various piping HVAC components (not refrigerant) per codes and use applicable trade practices for significant renovations & new installations. Develops an understanding of piping systems, with primary focus on HVAC piping systems.
  • Develops skill in diagnosing the root causes of malfunctioning system or equipment using test equipment & diagnostic procedures.
  • Uses air flow measuring devices; temperature reading devices (instantaneous & time recording); equipment self diagnostics.
  • Working independently and with senior techs repairs & works on heat recovery systems including heat wheels, run around loops, heat pipes, and air to air heat exchangers; humidification systems; air handlers; pumps; cooling towers; and fans.
  • Repairs and works on humidification systems.
  • Repairs and works on steam systems: steam trap replacement/rebuild; steam valve replacement/rebuild.
  • Develops a working knowledge of building codes, specifically the Plumbing & Mechanical Codes, and the College Construction Guidelines.
  • Uses the Campus Services server to obtain information such as as-built drawings and O&M Manuals. Able to read blueprints.
  • Collaborates with Building Automation Shop to diagnose & repair systems.
Learning from senior technicians

Learns from senior Plumber/HVAC Tech III and IV via working with and understanding procedures.
  • For example, receive clear and concise instructions from coworkers; be educated accepting constructive input from coworkers performing work.
