The Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology is seeking, a Physician Assistant to provide diagnosis, treatment, consultation, and follow-up to patients in the JHU Cardiology outpatient clinic at Greenspring Station. The Physician Assistant will conduct independent clinic sessions, interviewing patients, taking medical histories, performing physical examinations, ordering laboratory tests, coordinating the continuum of care, providing education to patients and significant others, providing oversight of clinical testing, and prescribing appropriate treatments. The goal of the PA in the Division of Cardiology is to streamline the provision of highly specialized professional service to patients, thereby improving patient care and increasing the efficiency of the physician group.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


  • Perform comprehensive history and physical examinations, establish accurate diagnoses, order pertinent laboratory tests.
  • Implement appropriate management plans and formulate concise relevant patient presentations for attending review.
  • Write orders, prescribe medications, perform and monitor diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within their scope of practice.
  • Initiate basic and advanced cardiac life support in response to emergencies.
  • Participate in patient education initiatives and coordinate short and long-term patient care through consultation with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health team and be responsible for providing comprehensive and age-appropriate care to both well and ill patients.
  • Educate patients and/or intervene in acute or chronic illness.
  • Provide comprehensive, age-appropriate and episodic care to patients as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team.
  • Order appropriate laboratory and imaging studies. Perform tests and procedures as indicated.
  • Establish a plan of care related to the patient's identified problems including medications, diet, therapeutic procedures, etc.
  • Consult with other health team members regarding proposed treatment guidelines as necessary.
  • Prescribe and regulate medications and formulas and perform other related procedures per PA/Physician written agreement.
  • Establish priorities in patient's care and management.
  • Record patient visit/interaction in concise, clear and timely manner in the electronic patient records. Evaluate effectiveness of plan and need for referral and/or follow-up.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of previously implemented medical treatment. Evaluate need for follow-up. Arrange referrals when indicated.
  • Assume responsibility and accountability for organizing time and workload to meet patient, staff, and departmental needs.
  • Adhere to departmental, organizational, State, and Federal policy, rules, and regulations.
  • Communicate with health care team members to assure patient and organizational needs are met.
  • The Physician Assistant practices within the guidelines of the department, and the Institution in accordance with the State of Maryland regulations. The Physician Assistant is granted affiliate staff privileges by the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Johns Hopkins Hospital; these privileges are renewed annually.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree; Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body; Completion of a CAAHEP certified Physician Assistant program. Must be licensed as PA in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.
  • Experience may be considered in lieu of bachelor's degree, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date


Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

Starting Salary Range: Min $102,000 - Max $151,400 ($118,950 targeted; Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
