These competencies are required to help the department maintain a high level of productivity and success. Each competency will be evaluated by observation. Performs proper specimen collection, by confirming patient ID, collecting specimens in proper tubes, utilizing venipuncture/capillary techniques, and accurately labeling the specimens to ensure accurate patient results.
• Demonstrates organizational skills by prioritizing collection requests. Selects appropriate equipment prior to collection: i.e. tubes, supplies. Verifies orders per department policy.
• Demonstrates proper technique to provide standard of care. This includes proper preparation, (site selection, order of draw), proper technique, following standard precautions and proper disposal of supplies according to facility policy.
• Demonstrates knowledge of special procedures i.e. Lactic Acid, Blood Alcohol, Glucose Tolerances, Blood Cultures etc.
• Maintains current knowledge of methods for blood, urine, stool and culture collections and explains specimen collection protocols to patients, nurses and physicians as required.
• Participates in annual skills review by reviewing age appropriate competencies i.e. receiving evaluation of technique by direct observation and/or completing annual competency exercise.
• Compares specimen label and/or requisition to patient ID band prior to collection and properly labels specimen attaching the right label to the correct tube after collection. Performs clerical duties accurately and efficiently. Performs ordering and registration procedures accurately and efficiently in order to ensure regulatory compliance. Provides customer service by answering broad technical questions, and directing others to appropriate resources.
• Ensures accurate order entry utilizing appropriate resources (i.e. reference lab manual, Intraweb, etc).
• Accurately enters patient demographics into HIS/LIS according to written/electronic requisition. Accurately enters registration information as it applies to facility.
• Demonstrates ability to operate office equipment (copier, phone, fax, report printer, label printer to include loading labels, etc.). Demonstrates ability to change toner cartridges, replace printer paper and resolve printer issues.
• Confirms completeness of requisition (i.e. name, signatures, diagnosis and test names). Communicates with MD or MD office staff to clarify orders.
• Reviews insurance and tests requested, identifies Medicare patients and obtains medical necessity. Takes appropriate action when diagnosis code is missing / fails and responds appropriately to ABN. Manages specimen accessioning accurately and efficiently to provide quality specimens for laboratory testing.
• Prioritizes Stats vs. Routine specimens as they arrive in the lab and handles workload efficiently.
• Evaluates specimen for acceptability per policy (volume, labeling, proper documentation for QA)
• Handles 24 hour urine container preparation and receipt (i.e. verify collection technique, total volume, correct preservative as per facility policy)
• Receives specimens accurately in the LIS: performs Clinical Order Entry correctly, resolving compliance issues.
• Accurately labels specimens with required information including label review of specimens collected by non-laboratory staff. Ensures accurate specimen processing to maintain specimen integrity.
• Evaluates specimen acceptability for testing (i.e. clots / hemolysis).
• Distributes specimens accordingly noting special requirements and prioritizing delivery to the department or other labs.
• Processes Reference Lab Tests (Mayo,etc.) or Miscellaneous tests per facility policy.
• Prepares send outs according to policy to include proper packaging, contacting courier, and confirming pickup
• Reviews system pending reports (Collections Inquiry, Pending Inquiry, etc.) for in-house/reference lab tests and resolves problems. Performs Drug Screen Collection and Point of Care testing procedures as assigned.
• Demonstrates ability to perform Drug Screen Collections including urine, blood, breath alcohol by correctly following policies/procedures with current credentialing documentation.
• Demonstrates ability to correctly perform POC (point of care) tests as assigned through adherence to policies/procedures, QC, and Quality Assurance monitoring
