Pharmacy Technician

Position Summary / Career Interest: Under the direct supervision of the Licensed Pharmacist and according to law and standard procedures, compounds, dispenses, and delivers medications and pharmaceutical supplies. Prepares sterile products as required. Fills orders, picks and delivers restocks for automated dispensing machines; pre-packs and compounds medications; enters charges into computer; makes rounds to deliver and return medications and IV's; and performs other technical duties as assigned.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

  • Demonstrates expertise in the technician role by staying abreast of departmental practices and policies, by consistently performing within the pharmacy practice act, and by displaying a consistent understanding of all required duties and the timeline for their completion.
  • Utilizes good judgment in carrying out the duties of a pharmacy technician by understanding and responding appropriately to customer needs. When appropriate, voices concern to the pharmacist or nurse when the pharmacy technician has any fear regarding patient safety.
  • Demonstrates technical ability in managing the various pharmacy systems including Pyxis, the pharmacy information system, the mobile isolation chambers, and the packager. Performs all required functions with these systems in an accurate and efficient manner.
  • Exhibits effective problem solving skills in dealing with customer needs. Minimizes error in dose calculations, labeling, and dispensing.
  • Consistently meets work schedule.
  • Demonstrates technical ability in managing the various pharmacy systems including Pyxis, the pharmacy information system, the mobile isolation chambers, the packager and the medication carousel. Performs all required functions with these systems in an accurate and efficient manner.
  • ECC: Collects complete medication histories from emergency patients including over-the-counter and herbal medications and accurately records the histories in the electronic medical record.
  • ECC: Is able to effectively triage during periods of high volume and determine priority of obtaining medication histories. Similarly, is able to contribute in during low patient census by determining priority of other tasks and projects."
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience

  • High School Graduate


Preferred Education and Experience

  • Graduation from an accredited pharmacy technician training program
  • Previous healthcare experience


Required Licensure and Certification

  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) within 1 Year
  • Pharmacy Technician Registration - State Board of Pharmacy (registration may be conferred during orientation)
