PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Hiring salary: $22.00/hour

This job announcement is for collecting candidate applications for current and future Personal Trainers. Applicants will be contacted only when a position need is identified, and qualifications match the needs of the position.

This is classified as VHNE (Variable Hour Non-Benefit Employee), where the selected candidate will work less than 29 hours per week. This position does not provide medical benefits. This position earns sick leave in accordance with the Healthy Families and Workplace Act.

OVERVIEW OF POSITION / DEPARTMENT
Plan, design and lead personal training clients through exercise for the City of Aurora's recreation division.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Responsible for creating own exercise program based on needs of clients with varying levels of fitness on an individual basis and a small group setting
  • Conduct assessments and make recommendations for improvements to client health and wellbeing
  • Communicate effectively with client(s) and Fitness Specialist
  • Possess knowledge of fitness equipment and appropriate use
  • Keep up with the new trends of fitness and remain current on certifications
  • Modify exercise plans based on needs, potential injuries or health issues
  • Oversee the use of fitness equipment to ensure clients exercise properly and safely
  • Perform minor first aid and respond to emergencies if needed
  • Effectively motivate participants and clients
  • Available to work on early or late shifts and on weekends
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Education:
  • High School Diploma; degree in Kinesiology or Sports Science preferred
Preferred Experience:
  • At least 1 year of experience teaching fitness classes/personal training.
  • Nationally recognized group fitness or personal training certification (NASM, ACE, ISSA, NSCA, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with adults ages 18+ preferred.
Knowledge:
  • Experience developing and implementing lesson plans and hands-on experience teaching subject matter.
  • Knowledge of diverse exercises and how to adjust plans according to each client's needs
  • Ability to instruct and motivate people
Skills:
  • Strong interpersonal and managerial skills
  • Skill in the use of windows-based programs to allow for effective teaching methods.
  • Strong customer service skills
Abilities:
  • Instruct and motivate group fitness participants
  • Maintain a safe environment
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Teamwork
Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • Personal Trainer/Group Fitness Instructor from accredited institution
  • CPR/AED certification
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Medium work that involves moving no more than 50 pounds at a time
  • Frequent lifting, carrying, walking and standing
  • May require frequent pushing, pulling, bending and stooping.
  • Teaching of fitness classes as scheduled.
Essential Personnel:
  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the city, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
Work Environment:
  • Works primarily indoors indoor in a clean, comfortable environment instructing a program.
Equipment Used:
  • Uses standard office equipment including personal computer and common office software such as email, internet, Word, Excel. Ability to operate a laptop and projector system to assist in teaching methods.
  • This position may require the incumbent to use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
