TITLE: Medical Lab Technician JOB OVERVIEW: Performs routine tests and analyses according to established procedures. DEPARTMENT: Laboratory WORK HOURS: As assigned REPORTS TO: Supervisor, Manager or Director Laboratory PREREQUISITES:

  • Certification by ASCP, AMT or NCA as a Medical Laboratory Technician or Clinical Laboratory Technician and Associate degree of science with equivalent certification.

  • ASCP, AMT or NCA Registry eligible Medical Laboratory Technician will be considered but must receive their certification within 12 months of hire.

  • Must provide proof of academic diploma, transcript, or primary source verification (PSV) report confirming credentials

  • QUALIFICATIONS:
  • One year of recent hospital or Clinical Reference Lab experience as a generalist preferred performing moderate to high complexity testing.

  • Ability to prioritize workload and assist co-workers as needed to meet established lab turnaround times.

  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal and communication skills in a diverse population.

  • Demonstrates good decision making and problem-solving skills.

  • Able to communicate effectively in oral and written form in the English language.

  • UNIQUE PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS, ENVIRONMENT AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Frequent exposure to blood and body fluids

  • Possible exposure to infectious specimens, communicable diseases, toxic substances, and other conditions common to a laboratory environment.

  • Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment, PPE, as appropriate.

  • Frequent interaction with a diverse population including team members and other customers.

  • Requires occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.

  • PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Essential Responsibilities and Competencies:

  • Performs all STAT and routine clinical testing according to established standards and completes analysis within established time frames 90% of the time.

  • Performs, records and reviews Quality Control Analysis according to established standards and takes appropriate corrective action when there is a variance in QC.

  • Performs proficiency testing such as CAP surveys.

  • Maintains and troubleshoots instruments and equipment and document such according to established protocols.

  • Reviews and evaluates lab reports for clarity, accuracy, timeliness.

  • Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and take necessary corrective action according to established protocols under the guidance of the Lead.

  • Receives all reagents and supplies according to standards.

  • Participates in specimen procurement, specimen handling and specimen processing.

  • May participate in training/orientation of MLT students and new employees.
