Responsibilities
The Adult Outpatient Peer Support Specialist is responsible to work in the Adult Outpatient Center, under the supervision of a Mental Health Professional, to provide patients and guests with support based on their personal experience that includes:
- Using their personal experience to develop meaningful and trusting relationships with patients.
- Building community of both patients and staff that is supportive and conducive to patient growth and recovery.
- Identifying resources for patients, which can include continued healthcare, housing, job assistance and aftercare services, as well as support in the task of finding or re-integrating with friends, families, and their community.
This position is supervised by a Mental Health Professional who assures that all services rendered by the Peer Specialist are provided in accordance with the certification training standards and within accepted standards of clinical practice.
- Serve as an active member of the Adult Outpatient Team in a non-clinical role.
- Serve as a role model to peers, exhibiting competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills.
- Serve as a consumer advocate.
- Assist the perspective patient and/or family with accessing information related to treatment continuum of care as well as other community resources, such as brochures, community contact information, etc.
- Offer the perspective patient and guest with insight related to hope of recovery from mental illness by sharing their own recovery stories and experiences and by encouraging perspective patients and guest to share their information openly and honestly to start on the path of recovery.
- Completes special projects as assigned according to established time frames:
- Prepare and maintain reports of results as requested.
- Identify and report equipment problems which require maintenance or repair.
- Facilitate the efficient operation of the department by answering the telephones and assisting callers or visitors in any way possible.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education/Accreditation/Licensure (required & preferred):
- Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, Counseling or related field required OR High School Graduate OR GED AND completion of a Peer Specialist Training Program.
- Successful completion of the Peer Specialist examination with six hours of job related training or education in each subsequent year of employment.
- Able to complete Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) training and able to perform BLS techniques required.
- Able to complete Safe Crisis Management (SCM) training and perform SCM techniques required.
Experience (required and preferred):
- Two years experience in a clinical setting preferred. A Peer Specialist must have a current or past diagnosis of the mental health concern related to the client served and have or had treatment for that diagnosis.
- Must demonstrate knowledge and competency in the following areas: A Peer Specialist is a paraprofessional who can assist their client with socialization, recovery, self-advocacy, preservation and enhancement of community living skills through development of a WRAP plan.
