Payroll Accountant Location: Fairfax, VA Minimum Clearance Required to Start: ability to obtain a TS/SCI with a poly More about your role: We are a growing defense contracting company seeking a seasoned and detail-oriented Payroll Accountant to manage and execute full-cycle payroll for our team of 100-150 employees. This role is responsible for processing monthly payroll for full-time staff and weekly payroll for part-time employees and contractors across multiple states, including Ohio, Virginia, Colorado, Texas, and Florida, as well as handling payroll for overseas employees. The ideal candidate will bring 5+ years of experience in payroll, including hands-on processing, multi-state compliance, and tax reporting. Experience with Paycor is strongly preferred. While prior experience in defense contracting is a plus, candidates must be U.S. citizens and eligible to obtain a security clearance Key Responsibilities Run accurate and timely monthly and weekly payrolls, handling full-cycle processing for domestic and international employees and contractors. Ensure payroll compliance with federal, state (OH, VA, CO, TX, FL), and international regulations. Maintain, update, and optimize payroll data and workflows in Paycor. Prepare and reconcile payroll reports; support audits, month-end close, and general ledger tie-outs. Manage payroll tax filings at the federal, state, and local levels; ensure timely deposits and filings. Collaborate with HR and Finance teams to ensure data accuracy regarding compensation, benefits, and new hires. Serve as the point of contact for employee payroll questions, handling sensitive information with professionalism. Stay informed of changes to payroll regulations, tax laws, and best practices. Qualifications 5+ years of full-cycle payroll experience, preferably in a small to mid-sized company. Experience with multi-state payroll; familiarity with OH, VA, CO, TX, and FL strongly preferred. Experience with Paycor (or similar payroll software) required. In-depth knowledge of payroll tax laws and accounting fundamentals. Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy. Strong Excel and reporting skills. Prior experience in the defense contracting industry is a plus. U.S. citizenship and eligibility to obtain a security clearance are required.
