GENERAL DESCRIPTION Performs direct supervisory and craft functions involving the fabrication, inspection, billing, and installation of both street and custom signs. Duties will include general bookkeeping, budgeting, data entry and analysis, maintaining inventories, preparation of reports and other assigned responsibilities; does related work as required.
Directs all areas of the Sign Shop operations in the sign making process as well as in the billing, and installation of signs to meet established standards. Will be responsible for all budgeting requirements and tracking of all accounts related to the Sign Shop. Must demonstrate the ability to do precise detailed technical work while also being able to perform strenuous physical labor in all weather conditions.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS- Responsible for upkeep of the E-911 street sign system by verifying, fabricating, installing or repairing street name signs in accordance to the MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices)
- Maintains inventory items by checking stock items in order to maintain sufficient stock on hand to meet operational needs
- Meets Parks and Recreation signage needs by fabricating, installing, inspecting, and maintaining park signs
- Supports county events by erecting tents and or stage, setting up tables and chairs, building items to support event and transporting other required items as needed by Event staff
- Installs and maintains gates and other security items i.e. fences or bollards in order to secure county properties
- Supports Purchasing Department by picking up and delivering surplus items to maintain proper control of county property
- Completes County of Roanoke work orders by building, repairing, or moving items or equipment in order to maintain county property
- Maintains records of fabrication, installation or repairs of signs within the county by logging information into computer in order to keep track of frequent maintenance needs for county signs
- Completes Time Entry in computerized work order system, e-mail, and computer usage as necessary
- Participates in Snow Removal of County properties as classified as Essential Personnel for Roanoke County.
REQUIREMENTS/PREFERENCESEducation Required: High School diploma or equivalent.
Preferred: Some college course work
Experience Required: General Computer Knowledge, Wood working skills, Experience with power hand tools
Certifications/ Licenses Required: Valid Virginia driver's license with good driving record,
Mobile Stage Operator Certification, Fork Lift Operator Certification
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Basic knowledge in computers, drafting, and carpentry work.
- Ability to maintain and expand existing data bank of sign information using the computer; learn how to operate and maintain technical sign making equipment; observe safety practices and work in a safe manner at all times; safely drive County work vehicles; effectively demonstrate good public relations and communication skills; supervise and train staff; do precise detailed technical work; to write effectively; and to perform strenuous physical labor in all weather conditions.
- Intermediate skill level in: woodworking in order to build custom sign frames to meet current designs and quality levels; draftsman skills for sign designs and to ensure proper and precise sign layouts.
- Basic skill level in use of computer.
Additional Requirements Subject to a complete criminal history background search with acceptable results. Following a conditional offer of employment must pass a post offer physical examination.
