UNC REX Emergency Department includes 54 beds with a non-designated holding area that consist of 8 beds with private rooms, catering to behavioral health patient needs in the ED . We have 2 major resuscitation rooms, triage rooms for initial assessment, in department radiology suite and a decontamination room. Our ED team cares for patients in all life threatening situations, less-critical injuries requiring minor treatment, acute and behavioral health diagnoses. Patients with heart conditions receive excellent care in the REX ED Chest Pain Center, home of the Triangle's first accredited chest pain center. Stroke care is provided to patients by our Joint Commission certified Advanced Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center. The REX ED Leadership team is focused on team work and positive co-worker recognition for staff in our fast-paced work environment.
Summary:
Works as a member of the Emergency Department clinical team. The paramedic collaborates with a multi-disciplinary team to provide appropriate age specific care in compliance with standards of practice in the hospital or urgent care setting. The paramedic will provide care to patients under the supervision of the Registered Nurse and Physician. A physician will provide oversight for clinical practice. Skill set approved by NC-OEMS will be utilized.
Responsibilities:
Takes directions from nurse, physician and/or advanced practice provider to implement prescribed therapies within scope of practice.
Provides rapid evaluation of presenting patients and communicates to the care team the patient; 1 2s required needs/care.
Identifies clinical priorities and initiates action to improve patient outcomes based on these priorities.
Maintains a safe, therapeutic and healing environment through ensuring patient privacy and responsive, respectful, accepting and professional behavior.
Acts as a patient advocate.
Communicates effectively to promote sharing of information.
Utilizes triage skills to assist in prioritizing of incoming ED patients.
Performs basic data collection, prepares patient for exam and communicates findings to primary and/or charge nurse.
Facilitates blood draw and starting of IVs based on orders and in coordination with primary/triage nurse.
Works to their paramedic license; does not give narcotics or perform intubations.
Transports patients via wheelchair or stretcher as needed throughout facility.
Performs other duties as assigned by management.

Education Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
Completion of OEMS approved training & competency program for Paramedic and current North Carolina Paramedic Certification required.
Certification in BLS, ACLS, PALS.
Professional Experience Requirements:
Six months experience in a pre-hospital environment as a Paramedic required.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
Incumbent must demonstrate the ability to understand, communicate and react effectively and appropriately to the unique needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. Incumbent must demonstrate clinical competence per the position's Skills Checklist before being allowed to perform independently.
