Job Summary
As a paralegal, you will work closely with attorneys in all aspects of the litigation process. In addition to assisting with handling cases, the paralegal will be responsible for providing support to survivors.
We are seeking a dedicated, detail-oriented paralegal with a litigation background and a keen passion for justice. You will be asked to manage litigation deadlines, maintain client communication, compose summaries, and draft legal documents, all while utilizing your resources and team members to meet tight deadlines. You will support multiple attorneys to provide comprehensive support during all phases of litigation to ensure all work is of the highest caliber. This role will operate in a hybrid-work environment with the expectation of at least three-days in-office each week. After a probationary period, this schedule will be approved with the assistance of the manager.
Key Responsibilities
- Investigate the facts of a case
- Complete damages interviews of clients
- Conduct research on institutional and individual defendants
- Organize and maintain documents in paper and electronic filing systems
- Gather and arrange evidence and legal documents for attorney review and case preparation
- Draft and prepare case and document summaries (medical/education/employment record, deposition transcript, abuse/damages)
- Draft correspondence and legal documents, such as propounding and responding to discovery, deposition notices, deposition subpoenas, meet and confer letters, and client correspondence
- Prepare case files for depositions, hearings, and trial
- Assist attorneys during trials by handling exhibits, taking notes, or reviewing trial transcripts
- Call clients, witnesses, attorneys, and outside vendors to schedule and conduct interviews, meetings and, depositions
- Manage a large caseload, including an ability to stay organized and to manage and prioritize work
- Create and implement processes and help manage projects for large groups of cases
- Answer and document telephone in-take calls from potential clients; reviewing with an attorney to determine case acceptance, complete necessary paperwork, and follow up with the client, if necessary
- Be familiar with and assist in the preparation of legal documents with state and federal court
- Contribute to effective workplace relationships to maintain a positive and productive work environment
Required Skills/Abilities
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to demonstrate empathy for clients
- Strong written and oral communication skills with an ability to write a summary of facts while telling a story
- Ability to effectively multitask, prioritize, and remain organized while meeting deadlines in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
- Awareness of or ability to learn about trauma-responsive ways to behave and communicate
- Westlaw and Lexis-Nexis proficiency
- Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat. SharePoint experience is a plus
- Experience working with clients who have experienced trauma with a keen interest in child protection is preferred
Education and Experience
- Associate degree in Paralegal Studies or a bachelor's degree in Paralegal Studies or related field
- Paralegal certificate
- 5+ years' experience as Paralegal
