Position Summary

This recruitment will be used to fill one (1) part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Lead Peer Advisor position for the Global Opportunities Office at Oregon State University (OSU).

The lead peer advisor serves as a pivotal member of the Office of Global Opportunities(Link is external) (Link opens in new window) (OSU GO) team, providing mentorship and leadership to the peer advisor group(Link is external) (Link opens in new window). In addition to advocating for education abroad, the lead peer advisor guides the team of peer advisors through professional development, fosters collaboration within the team, and ensures the successful execution of OSU GO initiatives.

As a mentor, they offer personalized support and training to peer advisors, equipping them to engage students effectively and uphold OSU GO's mission. The lead peer advisor also takes an active role in planning and coordinating team meetings, contributing creative solutions to enhance outreach and campus engagement, and addressing challenges with professionalism and initiative.

This leadership role combines advocacy, collaboration, and innovation, empowering the lead peer advisor to inspire their team while amplifying the transformative value of education abroad.

Position Duties

Mentor and Support Peer Advisors: Provide guidance, training, and ongoing support to Peer Advisors to help them achieve success in their roles and professional growth.

Facilitate Team Collaboration: Plan and lead team meetings, encourage open communication, and foster a positive and inclusive team dynamic.

Advocate for Education Abroad: Represent OSU GO in presentations, events, and one-on-one peer advising sessions to inspire students to explore international opportunities.

Oversee Onboarding: Manage the onboarding process for new Peer Advisors, ensuring they are equipped with the tools, knowledge, and support needed to excel in their roles.

Delegate Tasks to Peer Advisors: Assign tasks to Peer Advisors, ensuring timely and high-quality completion.

Manage Administrative Tasks: Oversee and troubleshoot issues related to work schedules and appointment booking software (Bookings) to ensure efficient operations.

Work Closely with Supervisor: Collaborate directly with the Peer Advisor Supervisor to align team efforts and ensure the successful implementation of OSU GO initiatives.

Assist with Program Initiatives: Take a leading role in special projects and initiatives, ensuring smooth implementation and alignment with OSU GO's mission.

Evaluate and Improve Processes: Collaborate with OSU GO staff to identify areas for improvement and propose actionable solutions to enhance the effectiveness of peer advising and outreach efforts.

Model Professionalism and Leadership: Demonstrate reliability, integrity, and professionalism in all interactions with students, peers, and supervisors.

Enhance Resource Expertise: Stay informed on OSU GO programs, policies, and processes to better assist students and advise Peer Advisors.

Foster Inclusion: Promote a welcoming and inclusive environment while helping to examine any barriers people may encounter in our spaces.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term
International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered "full-time" by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Additional Required Qualifications
  • Prior experience in a peer mentoring or leadership role.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage administrative tasks, such as scheduling and troubleshooting software (e.g., Bookings).
  • Excellent communication skills, including public speaking, written communication, and interpersonal engagement.
  • Familiarity with OSU GO-approved programs and a clear understanding of the benefits of education abroad.
  • Commitment to fostering a welcome and inclusive environment.
  • Integrity and confidentiality in handling student information and applications.
  • Proficiency with or willingness to learn digital tools such as Terra Dotta, Bookings, Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, Teams, and Canva.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Availability to work a minimum of 15 hours per week during the full academic year (with the possibility of up to 40 hours per week in summer)
  • Lived experience or significant engagement in cross-cultural or international educational environments.
  • Experience managing projects, including setting goals, coordinating tasks, and ensuring timely completion of deliverables.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

This position could begin in Summer 2025 or Fall 2025. The average work hours are 15-18 hours per week during the academic year with a possibility of up to 40 hours per week in summer. The starting pay rate is $20.00 per hour with the possibility of raises contingent upon length of service and exemplary performance. Typical business hours are 9am - 5pm. Occasional evening and weekend hours are required to support student programming and outreach.
