Operations Manager
Operations Manager needed for direct hire opportunity near Hobby Airport.
Position Summary
The General Operations Manager plays a pivotal role in directing and coordinating all transportation and logistics operations. This role is responsible for ensuring the safe, timely, and efficient execution of over-the-road freight services involving hazardous materials and refrigerated goods. The General Operations Manager will oversee fleet operations, dispatch, route planning, driver performance, maintenance programs, and regulatory compliance.
The ideal candidate will combine strong operational leadership with technical knowledge of DOT/HazMat regulations, refrigerated and tanker freight handling, and high-volume route optimization. This position requires a collaborative mindset and the ability to lead cross-functional teams to achieve consistent service quality, efficiency, and compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Operations Oversight
- Oversee daily transportation operations across all routes and equipment types (tankers, refrigerated trailers, 53-ft insulated units).
- Manage dispatch, driver scheduling, and real-time route adjustments.
- Implement preventive maintenance and fleet sanitation protocols.
- Oversee route planning, asset utilization, terminal performance, and cost-per-mile management.
- Develop and execute strategic operational initiatives aligned with corporate goals.
- Regulatory Compliance & Safety
- Ensure full adherence to DOT, FMCSA, EPA, OSHA, TSA, and HazMat transport protocols and state regulations.
- Enforce HazMat handling protocols and participate in federal/state audits.
- Lead internal safety initiatives and training programs, driver analytics, and risk mitigation plans.
Financial & Profitability Management
- Optimize operational P&L with direct accountability for margins, fuel costs, maintenance budgets, and route efficiencies.
- Implement KPIs for cost-per-load, trailer utilization, and turnaround time.
- Performance & Service Management
- Monitor key logistics KPIs including On-Time Delivery, Transit Time, and Order Accuracy.
- Respond to client issues related to delays, quality, or damages, ensuring timely resolution.
- Coordinate cross-functional support with HR, IT, Safety, and Maintenance departments.
Technology & Systems
- Oversee the implementation of telematics, temperature/pressure tracking, and vehicle analytics.
- Leverage digital platforms for live tracking, documentation, and reporting.
- Champion real-time analytics tools for route monitoring, POD tracking, and ELD compliance.
- Oversee operational dashboards, system integrations, and data-driven decision-making.
- Implement and maintain cloud-based reporting to support transparency and client service excellence.
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, train, and retain a high-performance operations team.
- Manage shift supervisors, dispatchers, driver coordinators, and maintenance leads.
- Maintain staff morale and enforce compliance with W-2 employee standards.
- Support the Certification Program and employee retention strategies.
Qualifications and Skills
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor?s degree in Logistics, Business Administration, Supply Chain, Engineering, or related field (required).
- 7+ years of experience in logistics operations, with at least 3 in hazardous freight.
Required Skills
- Proficient in DOT/HazMat regulations and safety protocols
- Fleet management and routing expertise
- Excellent leadership and conflict resolution skills
- Experience with logistics software, TMS, ELD, and telematics systems
- Analytical mindset for process optimization
Certifications:
- DOT Compliance Certification (required)
- Hazardous Materials Transportation Training (required)
- OSHA 30 or equivalent safety certification (preferred)
Work Environment
- Office-based with frequent presence in truck yard and loading zones
- Schedule flexibility, including early mornings, nights, and weekends as needed
- May involve occasional travel to support external terminals or clients
