Summary: The Instructional Technologist and LMS Administrator serves as a key resource for the university's digital learning ecosystem, providing both pedagogical guidance and technical expertise for the Canvas Learning Management System. This position is responsible for managing the institution's LMS environment, supporting faculty in the effective use of educational technologies, analyzing learning data to improve outcomes, and implementing innovative solutions that enhance teaching and learning. Working collaboratively with the Online Learning team, IT, and faculty, this role plays a vital role in advancing the institution's commitment to excellence in technology-enhanced education.
Responsibilities: LMS Administration - Serve as a primary administrator for Canvas LMS, managing user accounts, course creation, term settings, and system updates
- Ensure system security, stability, and reliability through regular maintenance, upgrades, and troubleshooting
- Configure and manage third-party tool integrations through LTI, API connections, and other integration methods
- Develop and maintain course templates and blueprints that align with institutional standards
- Perform regular system audits and implement best practices for LMS optimization
- Monitor and resolve user access issues and system performance concerns
- Generate and analyze LMS usage reports to identify patterns, trends, and opportunities for improvement
- Ensure compliance with data governance standards and privacy requirements
Instructional Technology Support - Consult with faculty on course design, development, and delivery using Canvas and integrated educational technologies
- Develop and facilitate workshops, training sessions, and resources on effective use of the LMS and related tools
- Guide faculty in implementing innovative teaching strategies using digital tools, including AIenhanced learning activities
- Apply Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to ensure accessibility and inclusivity in digital course materials
- Evaluate new and emerging educational technologies for potential adoption
- Create instructional guides, video tutorials, and documentation for faculty and students
- Research and implement emerging technologies that enhance teaching and learning practices
- Stay current on educational technology trends and provide leadership in digital innovation
Qualifications: Education: - Bachelor's degree in instructional technology, educational technology, instructional design, or a related field
- Master's degree in instructional technology, educational technology, or a related field preferred
- Canvas Administrator Certification preferred
Experience: - At least 3 years of experience in IT support or related field
- Experience with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for LMS customization
- Experience with AI tools in educational contexts (ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, or similar) preferred
- Experience with learning design tools (Articulate Storyline, H5P, Adobe Captivate) preferred
- Background in instructional design or online course development preferred
- Experience with project management tools and methodologies preferred
Skills & Abilities: - Proficiency with Canvas LMS administration and configuration
- Demonstrated ability to develop training materials and facilitate faculty workshops
- Understanding of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1) and UDL principles
- Familiarity with API and LTI technologies for system integration
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to manage multiple tasks independently
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, particularly in working with faculty with varying levels of technological proficiency
- Knowledge of scripting languages for process automation (Python, PowerShell) preferred
- Understanding of learning analytics and its application to improve educational outcomes preferred
