About this Opportunity
Brunswick County is currently accepting applications for an Office Assistant to work with and support the economic services units of the Department of Social Services. Work involves providing office support such as scanning, answering phone calls, greeting customers, handling mail, and assisting customers. The ideal candidate can work independently and as a member of a team and in a fast-paced environment.

Job responsibilities include:
  • Providing coverage to the agency's reception area, including greeting customers, answering phones, and providing general information about community and agency resources.
  • Utilizing NC FAST to provide customer information, and recording notes in NC FAST as appropriate.
  • Entering and updating customer information (i.e., address changes) in the agency's document management and day sheet systems.
  • Coping, scanning, emailing, and faxing confidential documentation as needed.
  • Providing general office and administrative support to agency staff as needed.
  • Working in the Call Center.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • General computer knowledge and ability to learn and navigate various programs and databases
  • Ability to complete NC Fast Certifications
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and reassess as priorities change in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to de-escalate upset customers / remain calm in stressful situations
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
Normal Business Hours are 8:30 am - 5:00 pm Monday - Friday. Must be available to work during emergency situations.
Education and Experience
High School diploma (or GED) and two (2) years of office assistant/secretarial experience; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Graduation from technical school or secretarial program highly desirable. Bilingual in English/Spanish a plus.

Physical Requirements

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including copiers, calculators, etc. Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 5 pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Light Work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree. However, if the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
