Essential Functions

  • Ability to perform general physical activities that require considerable use of arms, hands, and fingers to manipulate equipment, instruments, and people. Some whole-body movement such as lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, carrying objects, and handling material.

Level of Supervision or Independent Judgement
  • Performs duties under moderate supervision from higher-level academic administrators to ensure cohesive and consistent academic rigor and quality of programs, courses, and educational opportunities provided.
  • Exercise independent decision making concerning the class environment, instructional methods/delivery, and program administration within the umbrella of academic freedom and the College's quality education guidance and directives.
Position Overview: Reporting to the Vice President of Academics, the Nursing Program Director effectively manages the overall operations, daily activities, staff, and faculty of the Nursing program in support of the College's mission statement and in accordance with established goals, objectives, and policies. The Nursing Program Director provides visionary leadership and strategic direction for the Nursing Program at Gila Community College. This role is responsible for the administration, planning, and management of all nursing education activities and ensures the program meets accreditation standards and state regulations. The Director of Nursing fosters a collaborative and inclusive environment that promotes student success, faculty development, and community engagement.

Nursing Program Director/Faculty Duties and Responsibilities

Administrators are expected to perform any or all duties listed below in a safe, efficient, and effective manner.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as the liaison responsible for representing GCC Nursing with the Arizona State Board of Nursing.
  • Oversee the Nursing Program Assistant Administrator(s) and Allied Health Programs.
  • In conjunction with faculty and the Vice President of Academics, develops short-term and long-term strategic planning initiatives that support the College's mission statement and offer quality educational programs and services in the Health Sciences disciplines to students.
  • Defines, develops, implements, and monitors effective policies and procedures that support the goals and objectives of the Nursing Program. Initiates and implements ideas to enhance the program's current and changing programs offered within a diverse and multi-cultural community.
  • Provides oversight and directs the ongoing activities of the Nursing Program to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of overall operations.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all faculty and clinical instructors meet the requisite qualifications and maintain current records of those qualifications and performance evaluations.
  • Responsible for compliance with Arizona State Board of Nursing rules.
  • Oversees the design and development of the curriculum.
  • In conjunction with faculty, coordinates the selection and ordering of textbooks and related equipment and materials necessary for completion of the program's coursework. Encourages the development and usage of pedagogical technology and instructional media to contribute to effective teaching and learning; fosters the implementation of teaching/learning modalities that include active student participation.
  • Determines the schedule and content of courses with prerequisites to be offered each semester in consultation with faculty and the Vice President of Academics.
  • Coordinates the continuing assessment of curriculum and content of course offerings.
  • Ensures that program learning outcomes are reviewed, updated, and assessed on an annual basis.
  • Participates in the development of articulation agreements with four-year institutions and hospitals to facilitate transfer of graduates.
  • Addresses any inappropriate conduct or behavior from faculty and/or students, including making recommendations for appropriate action.
  • Assists in the identification and timely resolution of student problems.
  • Oversees policies and procedures regarding safe patient care for both students and faculty.
  • Responsible for faculty assignments and evaluations as well as managing educational resources. Negotiates with community agencies and institutions for learning facilities and clinical experiences. Ensure that all clinical agency contracts are executed periodically, according to institutional or program policy.
  • Secures clinical sites at hospitals and health care agencies and develops contracts to provide clinical experiences for students.
  • Conducts faculty in-class observations to assess teaching performance. Works with faculty on a one-on-one basis to create opportunities for personal development and growth.
  • Ensures all regulatory standards are being met.
  • Establishes and maintains program documentation and records.
  • In conjunction with faculty, prepares periodic accreditation reports and documents as required by relevant, national accreditation agencies and the State Board of Nursing.
  • Conducts and chairs nursing faculty/staff meetings to promote a constant flow of information, open discussions, knowledge sharing, and to keep staff well informed.
  • Manages department's financial affairs effectively, ethically, and innovatively within the constraints of approved budget.
  • Prepares and administers the budgets of the Nursing Programs in the consultation with the Vice President of Academics.
  • Teaches 3-6 credits per semester in the Nursing Program as assigned.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
  • A combination of education, training, and experience that meets the appropriate credentialing guidelines for the instructional area. (pg. 11 NPA)
  • Ability to pass a background screening process and/or obtain a Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card is necessary.
  • Master's Degree - Nursing (MSN) is required.
  • At least three (3) years of experience as a Registered Nurse providing direct patient care and at least two (2) years of experience in nursing education.
  • Current RN license in the state of Arizona that is in good standing.
  • Educational preparation or experience in curriculum development and administration.
  • Compliance with established Nursing Program health policy.

Preferred Skills
  • Doctorate in Nursing.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and external partners; Strong relationship building, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively use various technologies, programs, and instructional methods to produce quality instructional and student success opportunities.
  • Proficiency in curriculum development and assessment.
  • Familiarity with and understanding of safe work practices particularly when performing general physical activities.
