St. Mary Medical Center is seeking a Nurse Practitioner to work 1 day/week (8 - 4:30 PM) as a PRN for Pre-admission testing. All patients who will receive anesthesia must be screened to determine if they can tolerate it. Most work will be telephonic unless patient is high risk or has a complicated medical history, then patient will be brought in for a physical examination. NP will review medications and medical history in preparation for upcoming procedures. Various procedures: Cardiac Catheterization, Endoscopy, Colonoscopy, Orthopedic surgeries, etc. NP will educate patient on upcoming procedure and order appropriate testing if necessary (EKG, bloodwork, etc.)


Job Description Summary

A Certified Nurse Practitioner who prepares adult and pediatric patients for their admission and surgical experience. This includes their medical and anesthesia history, physical assessment, and the planning/evaluation of patient needs to facilitate efficient pre-operative care.


Posting Job Description

Performs history and physical examinations for adult and pediatric patients within scope of practice.

Discusses previous anesthesia history and options for current anesthesia plan of care. Documents ASA status.

Provides patient teaching for patient/family regarding the perioperative experience. Modifies approach based on age, background, and development status.

Orders laboratory, diagnostic tests, and medications utilizing the protocols developed by the Department of Anesthesia.

Consults with anesthesiologists when deviation from protocol is indicated.

Communicates significant abnormal findings and problems to the physician and/or anesthesiologist.

Review chart for patient optimization and completeness prior to surgery.

Serve as a resource to nurse navigators for clinical decision making.

Performs other duties as assigned.
