Position Summary: The Neurodiagnostic Technologist (NDT) uses electro-neurodiagnostic equipment to perform tests as directed by a physician to diagnose neurological conditions such as epilepsy, seizure disorders, strokes, motor neuron disorders, and degenerative brain diseases. Specific job responsibilities are contingent on department need and competency to perform specific diagnostic tests.


Essential Functions:

  • Summarize technical data to assist physicians to diagnose nervous system disorders.
  • Conduct tests or studies such as electroencephalography (EEG), polysomnography (PSG), nerve conduction studies (NCS), and electromyography (EMG) submitting reports to physicians summarizing test results.
  • Measure patients' body parts and mark locations where electrodes are to be placed.
  • Attach electrodes to patients using adhesives.
  • Adjust equipment to optimize viewing of the nervous system.
  • Collect patients' medical information needed to perform and customize tests as needed. Explain testing procedures to patients, answering questions or reassuring patients as needed.
  • Measure visual, auditory, or somatosensory evoked potentials (EPs) to determine responses to stimuli.
  • Indicate artifacts or interferences derived from sources outside of the brain, such as poor electrode contact or patient movement, on electro-neurodiagnostic recordings.
  • Set up, program, or record montages or electrical combinations when testing peripheral nerve, spinal cord, subcortical, or cortical responses.
  • Calibrate, troubleshoot, or repair equipment and correct malfunctions as needed.

Other Functions:

  • Participate in research projects, conferences, or technical meetings.
  • Assist in training technicians, medical students, residents, or other staff members.
