Network Support Engineer
Position Overview: The Network Support Engineer is responsible for providing hands-on assistance to on-site technicians, guiding them through physical tasks while managing network and hardware-related issues during on-call night shifts. This role involves executing planned changes, troubleshooting, and maintenance activities under strict change control procedures. The technician will ensure smooth data center operations by remotely supporting installations, repairs, and upgrades while coordinating with both on-site and remote teams during off-hours.
Key Responsibilities:
Remote Guidance for On-Site Technicians:
o Provide detailed, step-by-step remote guidance to on-site technicians for tasks such as hardware installation, cable management, and equipment troubleshooting.
o Assist in the setup, configuration, and replacement of servers, networking devices (e.g., switches, routers), and storage units.
Rotating On-Call Night Shift Support: (Fill in if someone is out)
o Be available for on-call duties during night shifts to respond to urgent requests, incidents, and system outages.
o Provide real-time support during critical maintenance windows and address any issues that arise during off-hours.
Change Control Implementation:
o Execute scheduled hardware or network changes, upgrades, and configurations according to change control protocols during the night shift.
o Ensure all changes follow proper documentation, testing, and approval processes before implementation.
o Collaborate with the change management team to review, approve, and document all changes, ensuring minimal impact on live environments.
Troubleshooting & Diagnostics:
o Remotely assist in diagnosing hardware and network issues, guiding on-site technicians through repairs or component replacements.
o Use monitoring tools to identify potential issues and address them before they escalate into larger problems.
Equipment Installation & Maintenance:
o Direct on-site technicians during the installation of servers, routers, switches, and other hardware in line with company standards.
o Ensure proper power, cabling, and network configurations for all newly installed or replaced equipment.
Cable Management & Power Distribution:
o Oversee cable management, ensuring proper labeling, routing, and organization.
o Assist with checking power distribution units (PDUs), UPS systems, and other power-related components during installations or maintenance activities.
Documentation & Reporting:
o Maintain accurate documentation of all tasks performed during the night shift, including changes, incidents, and resolutions.
o Create thorough handover reports for the daytime teams, ensuring continuity and clear communication of any unresolved issues or ongoing projects.
Collaboration with Data Center & IT Teams:
o Act as the main point of contact between on-site technicians and remote engineering or support teams during night shifts.
o Coordinate with different teams to ensure that changes and troubleshooting are completed efficiently and without impacting critical operations.
Inventory & Equipment Management:
o Guide on-site teams in managing hardware inventory, labeling new or decommissioned equipment, and tracking consumables.
o Ensure all hardware and spare parts are accounted for and properly organized.
Required Qualifications:
2-4 years of experience in data center operations, network support, or related roles.
Familiarity with networking hardware (e.g., switches, routers), servers, storage devices, and data center infrastructure.
Experience with change control processes in IT or data center environments.
Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to guide physical and technical repairs remotely.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, especially for guiding non-technical personnel through technical tasks.
- Proficiency in network monitoring tools (e.g., SolarWinds, PRTG).
- Knowledge of security protocols (SSL, IPsec, ACLs).
- Excellent troubleshooting and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Relevant certifications (e.g., CCNA, CompTIA A+, or equivalent).
Knowledge of ITIL or other service management frameworks.
Familiarity with network monitoring tools and ticketing systems.
Working Conditions:
Ability to manage change control procedures and adhere to strict documentation protocols.
Work may require coordination across multiple data center locations and with multiple remote teams simultaneously.
