JOB TITLE - NETWORK ENGINEER

NATURE OF WORK:

An employee in this field is responsible for designing and implementing local and wide area networks in a local school agency. Employee is responsible for the installation, maintenance and operation of wide area networks, associated computer hardware and software, (including servers) and telephony systems and infrastructure. Employee coordinates with the Chief Technology Officer regarding the evaluation of school system networking needs and recommends improvements and modifications to existing infrastructure. Employee diagnoses and resolves complex wide and local area network issues to ensure efficient and effective operations. In other words, they keep the internet and phones working while keeping the district's network secure.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Completion of a four year degree in Computer Science, or related field with coursework in networking and two years of network experience including wide area networks, and supervisory training or experience; or an associate's degree in Computer Science or related field, two years experience in a wide area network environment, supervisory training or experience, or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Knowledge of networking protocols, experience in routed and frame relay network environments, experience with network management utilities. Appropriate hardware certifications such as Cisco, HP ProCurve, Aruba or any equivalent combination of training, certification, and/or experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Designs, installs, and maintains local area networks across all school district locations; including firewalls, routers, network switches, servers, workstations, wireless access points, printers and other peripheral devices as well as network and telephony cabling with security in mind.
  2. Installs and maintains DHCP, DNS, and content filtering services necessary for a secure, responsive network and in compliance with all federal and state requirements.
  3. Uses network management systems to monitor, diagnose, control, alert and measure performance of LAN and WAN.
  4. Creates and maintains documentation relating to network configuration, network mapping, operating procedures, and service records relating to network hardware and software.
  5. Responsible for cybersecurity and cyber hygiene of networks, wireless, and WAN services.
  6. Plans and executes recurring system security audits in alignment with industry and business standards.
  7. Implements and tests Business Continuity / Disaster Recovery systems and procedures, including contingency planning for server software, hardware failures for isolated and major outages.
  8. Provides support for all installed operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, Apple and Linux.
  9. Maintains effective communication with vendors, peers and clients in support of assigned projects and initiatives.
  10. Serves as a collaborative leader for the Technology Services department; including the development of long- or short-range planning, internal training for peers, on-call support for technical needs, etc.
  11. Collaborates with the CTO to manage the e-rate program and record-keeping.
  12. Attends classes, seminars, conferences and reviews professional literature to enhance knowledge of trends and developments related to local area network systems.
  13. Performs other work related tasks as required.

MINIMUM STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM RESPONSIBILITIES:

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment and tools including computers, scanners, adding machines, computer software, computer hardware, etc. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 5 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.

Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to assistants or subordinates.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, technical manuals, newsletters, trade journals, etc. Requires the ability to prepare reports, forms, training materials, system documentation, etc. using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style. Requires the ability to speak to people with poise, voice control and confidence.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form; and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to give oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages including computer terminology.

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages; understand and apply the theories of algebra and geometry.

Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.

Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using computer equipment.

Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as computer equipment. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress.

Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear.). Must be able to communicate via telephone.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Strong knowledge of wide and local area network architecture, protocols, and diagnostic tools
  • Thorough understanding of TCP IP, routing, switching and general networking
  • Strong knowledge of networked operating systems, computers and related technologies, including Apple, Linux and Windows OS
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of technology users
  • Skilled in scripting languages such as bash, powershell and python
  • Knowledge of VLANs and network subnetting
  • Knowledge of network security and cybersecurity standards
  • Ability to read and interpret schematic diagrams and maintenance documentation.
  • Working knowledge of electronic principles
  • Ability to maintain complete and accurate records, logs and reports
  • Ability to respond to questions and make judgments based on knowledge of computer equipment and server environments
  • Ability to set and meet deadlines in collaboration with CTO and peers
  • Lift and carry 50lb. servers; install rack mount servers and network devices in 2 and 4-post racks with minimal assistance
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Full-time for twelve months

Salary based on state and local salary schedules: Grade 76
