Job Summary and Essential Functions
This a mid-career level position that, responsible for the day-to-day support/maintenance of network infrastructure for Berkeley County Government. This job supports the configuration of switches, routers, access points, firewalls, and cellular routers in support of various county departments; and deals courteously and professionally with coworkers and the public.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Assists with the day-to-day operations, maintenance and monitoring of network and wireless infrastructure systems to support county client and server connectivity.
  • Setup and monitor county network infrastructure to provide for proactive identification of network issues to minimize downtime or service interruptions for the agency.
  • Ability to work with staff or vendors within or outside of IT of all skill levels to implement products or diagnose and resolve network issues. May need to engage peers when necessary to resolve multi-faceted issues.
  • Decent analytical or problem-solving skills to diagnose, repair, or replace network equipment as required to maintain proper and secure network operations.
  • Provide technical assistance by responding to inquiries from others regarding errors, problems, or questions about the network.
  • Coordinating implementing network security and network use policies with other IT team members.
  • Assists with the support of SCADA, scale, and other systems used by Water and Sanitation in the maintenance of the utility's wastewater and garbage disposal functions.
  • Ability to create and maintain accurate network documentation using Microsoft Visio
  • Provide oversight of contracted personnel when used.
  • Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new products or unfamiliar technologies using documentation and/or public internet resources.
  • Being a self-starter that can work independently but comfortable in a team environment.
  • Having a good work ethic and is flexible in working hours as the situation requires.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements to Perform Work
  • Associate degree in a related field;
  • Two (2) years of related experience in business or government information technology;
  • Equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Special Requirements:
  • Must have and maintain a valid South Carolina driver's license with a safe driving record;
  • Departmental testing may be administered during interview
  • A criminal background check will be completed on selected applicant if a current one (less than 3 years old) is not on file.
  • U.S. citizenship required pursuant to security investigation for clearance if selected for the position.
  • This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • This position is considered emergency essential and will be required to report to work during any declared emergency situation (i.e. non-evacuation during hurricane events).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of network design, network practices and procedures, and security best practices.
  • Ability to troubleshoot effectively and resolve problems quickly.
  • Ability to accurately create, update, and maintain a repository of network documentation using Microsoft Visio.
  • Industry Certifications from Cisco, CompTIA, etc. are highly preferred (i.e. CCNA)
  • CompTIA Security+ or equivalent is preferred.
  • Skilled in excellent oral and written communications.
  • Skilled in organization, detail orientation and multi-tasking.
  • Ability to work under pressure; multi-task; be efficient; flexible to change; meet deadlines with quality work; interact with others while maintaining decorum regardless of the situation.
Physical Demands
This position requires the employee to sit and use hands to handle or operate objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Conditions
The work is regularly performed in a safe and secure work environment that may periodically have unpredicted requirements or demands. Normal working hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm with the ability to work flexible hours when necessary. Will serve in a departmental on-call rotation for emergencies. Scheduled hours/days, job location, duties and any other information contained herein is subject to change. May be required to work extra hours and to perform extra or different duties during emergency situations.
