Network Engineer IIposition.
The Network Engineer II is responsible for overseeing the Department's IT network infrastructure, ensuring seamless connectivity and communication across the organization. Under general supervision, this role involves the design, implementation, support, and optimization of Local Area Networks (LAN), Wide Area Networks (WAN), and telecommunications systems. This position plays a critical role in maintaining secure and efficient network operations while providing technical guidance and leadership to team members. The role reports to the Division Chief of Information Technology.
Illustrative Examples of Work: - Design, configure, and maintain network and computing infrastructure, including LAN, WAN, and related systems.
- Administer and support network services, devices, and equipment such as routers, switches, firewalls, and VoIP systems.
- Respond to escalated Service Desk tickets (Level 3) and lead service ticket responses.
- Serve as the Local Security Officer (LSO) for the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS), overseeing security, connectivity, and user access privileges.
- Perform routine maintenance on networking components, generate reports, and maintain detailed records of network operations and equipment.
- Support server administration, virtualization, data storage solutions, and disaster recovery protocols.
- Monitor server logs and performance to proactively address system issues and optimize reliability.
- Manage Active Directory, including user and group account administration, and enforce security and group policies.
- Install and update Microsoft operating systems, security patches, and BIOS firmware to maintain system integrity.
- Plan and execute system failover procedures, including regular testing and continuity of operations planning.
- Conduct network security audits and enforce access controls to protect data and applications.
- Provide training and promote security best practices to enhance system efficiency and user awareness.
- Research and recommend new end-user technology, including multi-function devices, AV equipment, tablets, and computing hardware.
- Lead and mentor team members, assign tasks, establish priorities, and evaluate performance.
- Performs related work as required.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities for hardware and network infrastructure. Proficiency with tools and systems like Active Directory, server clusters, Microsoft OS, and VoIP systems. Effective communicator, capable of simplifying complex technical concepts for non-technical users. Skilled in project management, prioritization, and providing technical leadership within a team. Knowledge of cybersecurity protocols and regulatory compliance standards.
MinimumQualifications:At least considerable years of experience in performing systems programming work in a mainframe, LAN or WAN environment, or performing equivalent work in a related field; and completion of college-level courses in computer science, business administration or a related field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Preferred Qualifications:Four-Year College Degree; Five years of progressive IT experience, including supervisory responsibilities. Familiarity with Nortel and Cisco network solutions, as well as VPNs, firewalls, and wireless technologies. Experience managing Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) applications like SAMS, VaCMS, and OASIS. Proven expertise in diagnosing and resolving hardware issues with Dell and Hewlett Packard systems. Commitment to delivering exceptional customer service and fostering operational excellence.
