The City of Chesapeake Department of Information Technology ( DIT ) is seeking a qualified and experienced
Network Engineer to join our team. The Network Engineer will play a hands-on role in delivering communications engineering services across the City of Chesapeake, with a specific focus on network and communication platforms. This position involves overseeing and maintaining the City's diverse communication systems, including core, LAN , and WAN networks, VoIP technologies, Wi-Fi management, fiber runs, firewall management, and network infrastructure asset management.
As a key team member, the Network Engineer will serve as the primary point of contact ( POC ) and subject matter expert ( SME ) for communication infrastructure and network engineering initiatives. The role spans all phases of project implementation-from conceptualization to execution-while ensuring ongoing operational support. Additionally, the Network Engineer will support various IT networking communications services, including network engineering, VoIP and Wi-Fi technology management, and network operational issues, as well as asset inventories, new service requests, and process improvement efforts.
This role requires occasional after-hours and on-call duties.
Key Responsibilities: - Provide hands-on engineering and technical expertise for multiple communication platforms within the City of Chesapeake, including core, LAN , and WAN networks, VoIP, Wi-Fi infrastructure, fiber runs, firewall management, and network asset management.
- Serve as the subject matter expert for communication infrastructure and network engineering initiatives, ensuring successful transition from the conceptual to the implementation phase.
- Support IT operations by managing network communication services, identifying and resolving operational issues, and contributing to the improvement of IT workflow processes.
- Oversee the coordination and delivery of networking communications engineering and operational support services, including VoIP, Wi-Fi, network engineering, and ISP management.
- Manage relationships with vendors and contractors for network communications hardware/software and services.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Proven experience in network communications engineering within large enterprise systems, with a specialization in at least two of the following areas: core network support, LAN / WAN support, ISP management, VoIP, Wi-Fi infrastructure, firewall management, and fiber optics.
- Solid background in IT operations and technical support services.
- Demonstrated expertise in network engineering applications and lifecycle management, with the ability to analyze, evaluate, and resolve complex issues effectively
- Experience working in a complex, multi-vendor, matrixed IT environment.
- Strong understanding of cross-functional IT operations and how IT platforms support broader business needs.

Required Qualifications Vocational/Educational Requirement: Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate's degree in computer science, information systems, or a closely related field.
Experience: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of two year of related, full-time equivalent experience.
Special Certifications and Licenses: Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with
City Driving Standards .
Special Requirements: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
