Position Summary
The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is an advanced practice registered nurse who is master's and/or doctorly prepared in nursing and is nationally board certified in an area of clinical expertise or specific patient population. Functioning as a leader, innovator, and change agent, the CNS strives to meet the needs of patient, family, health care system through coordinated efforts with interdisciplinary providers. The CNS utilizes advanced knowledge and skills to influence patient care outcomes through three spheres of impact: patient and family, nurse and nursing practice, and organization and systems. The CNS advocates for and advances nursing practice through application of evidence-based interventions to enhance safe patient care. The CNS has the skills and expertise to identify gaps in current practice, help design and implement cost-effective interventions, and assess and evaluate outcomes to improve overall health care delivery. This individual provides expert consultation and educational services in specialty area to other health care providers, patients, and families. Fostering communication and promoting a healthy work environment are vital to this role. In addition, the CNS assists in advancing the science of nursing practice by leading/participating in research opportunities and enhanced utilization of evidence-based practice. Promotes policy change and practice enhancement at the organizational, state, and national level and through publications and presentations of the contributions to the three spheres of influence.
Minimum Requirements
Master of Science in Nursing with Clinical Nurse Specialist concentration is required.
Doctorate of Nursing Practice with CNS concentration preferred.
American Heart Association BLS is required.
Current certification as a Clinical Nurse Specialist from a national credentialing body approved by the NC Board of Nursing or completed 1 year from the hire date is required or Pediatric/Neonatal/Adult CNS within three years of hire.
More than 4 years as a Registered Nurse required.
The CNS concentration may be substituted for a Master of Science in Nursing when accompanied by either:
1. Clinical Nurse Specialist certification with the NC Board of Nursing
2. Post-master's certificate with a CNS concentration.
Or CNS concentration may be substituted for Master of Science in Nursing degree along with one of the following:
1. Pediatric/Neonatal specific CNS program within one year of hire
2. Adult CNS program (for Women's CNS) within one year of hire
