Salmon, Idaho Experience
The Mohs Technician provides specialized technical support during Mohs micrographic surgery, assisting the physician in preparing and analyzing tissue specimens to ensure accurate diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer. This position requires precision, attention to detail, and knowledge of laboratory procedures.
Duties:
Prepare tissue specimens by processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining for examination by the Mohs surgeon. Receive tissue specimens from the Mohs Surgeon during surgery; accurately label and map tissue samples according to established protocols; process tissue specimens using appropriate techniques including freezing, embedding sectioning, and staining; operate and maintain laboratory equipment such as cryostats and microtomes.
Prepare microscope slides with tissue sections, ensuring proper orientation and quality; perform routine and specialized staining procedures on tissue sections; review slides for quality control before presenting to the Mohs surgeon.
Assist the Mohs surgeon during procedures by preparing the surgical site, handling instruments, and maintaining patient comfort; communicate clearly with the surgeon regarding tissue analysis and next steps.
Maintain detailed records of all specimens including patient information, tissue processing steps, and slide preparation; adhere to all laboratory safety guidelines and quality control standards.
Clean and maintain equipment, work surfaces, and supplies; monitor inventory levels of reagents and supplies, and place orders as needed.
Operating and maintaining laboratory equipment like cryostats and microtomes; ensuring accurate specimen labeling and documentation.
Collaborates closely with the Mohs surgeon and clinical staff to ensure timely specimen processing; and monitoring and ordering laboratory supplies.
Provide reassurance and information to patients about the specimen process during Mohs surgery.
Requirements:
High School diploma or equivalent required
Advanced training or certification in histology or laboratory science preferred
Prior experience with Mohs surgery or dermatology laboratory work preferred
Proficiency in operating cryostat and other laboratory equipment
