Kelly Government Solutions offers scientists the opportunity to support basic and applied research projects designed to protect our military and nation from current and emerging biological threat agents. We have multiple openings for Microbiology Research Technicians to support bacteriology and virology research and animal challenge protocols in the infectious disease program within a Department of Defense laboratory in Frederick, MD. Positions are contingent upon contract award.

KEY TASKS

(1) Support research efforts to define elements and factors involved in bacterial virulence, which includes assisting with animal protocols, injections, handling, health monitoring, and specimen collection

(2) Perform in vitro testing of candidate vaccines, therapeutics, and examination of pathogenesis

(3) Perform ELISA, neutralization, and other virology assays using human, non-human primate, and rodent serum to evaluate novel vaccine strategies and monoclonal antibody identification

(4) Prepare plates for use for Ames sporulation isolation and purification.

(5) Assist with flow cytometry to determine cellular distribution in mouse samples and intracellular cytokine expression; use a BD FACS Calibur and BD FACS Canto II to analyze cellular distribution.

(6) Perform cell biology, biochemical, and microbiological tasks including protein gel electrophoresis, western blot analysis, growth of macrophage cell lines, live-dead cell determinations, prepares microbiological media for bacterial cultures.

(7) Maintain cell lines and perform assays to ensure cell line viability and metabolic activity; assist with cryopreservation and thawing of cell lines

(8) Order lab supplies for BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories

(9) Prepare and participate in BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 laboratory inspections


KEY REQUIREMENTS

(1) Bachelor or master's degree in Biology, Biochemistry, or related scientific discipline

(2) Minimum of two (2) years of laboratory research experience with a focus on immunology and microbiology-related techniques including cell culture, DNA/RNA extraction and purification, PCR, RT-PCR, ELISA, flow cytometry, and assays

(3) Must be comfortable working with animal models for studies and handling bacterial and viral pathogens for in vitro and in vivo studies

(4) Willing and able to work in BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 biocontainment labs, which requires eligibility and enrollment in the Biological Personnel Reliability Program (BPRP) and the Controlled Substance Personnel Reliability Program (CS-PRP)

(5) US citizenship as per contract requirements to pass background check and obtain required security clearance
