Medical Lab Technician

Education Required: Associates Degree OR completion of an accredited MLT Program Experience Preferred: 1 Year experience in a laboratory Skills Strong analytical/problem solving skills. Ability to communicate effectively with different levels of management. Demonstrates clear verbal and written communication Excellent time management, interpersonal, presentation, organization, prioritizing, decision-making, and planning skills. Licensure/Certification/Registration Required: Certified as a Medical Lab Technician from a nationally recognized laboratory certifying agency or eligible to sit for exam at time of hire; must obtain certification within 90 days of hire. Performs routine and/or special specimen collection, confirms patient ID Uses proper container, technique, correctly applies labels to containers Accessions specimens accurately and efficiently, -evaluates specimen appropriateness, verifies correct labeling, correctly(cancels/adds/combines/enters physician orders) Processes samples to preserve sample integrity, correct centrifuge times, proper preservatives, appropriate aliquots/sample sharing, packages send out tests, processes histology samples Transports samples to correct locations and stores samples under appropriate conditions, pre and post testing Operates systems/methodologies in order to produce timely and accurate data for patients, QC, and proficiency testing. Performs correctly all clinical laboratory test procedures assigned in department specific competencies. Confirmed by daily quality control, result review, and/or periodic competency review Performs (or ensures was performed) daily bench QA checks, within limits QC, daily maintenance, in-date and QS reagents, calibrations/standardizations. Safeguards samples identification, samples labeled according to SOP, accurate manual input of patient demographics, accurate aliquot identification during manual tests Safeguards samples identification, correctly prepares sample, precipitation, dilution, pretreatment, streaking, clot detection, pipetting (qualitative or quantitative) Meets established TATs during routine and heavy workflow, using good judgment prioritizes tasks-at-hand During operation, observes systems and resolves issues, minimizing negative impact to patient care, checks mechanics, reports/responds appropriately to instrument alarms, recognizes/resolves unusual data trends. Performs contingent actions, dilutes, reviews/retests criticals, investigates/resolves sample and data flags, ensures review of results by pathologist/supervisor, and ensures reflex testing performed. Reports clinical data accurately and efficiently so that care givers receive timely patient information Evaluates data before releasing as a result to care givers: considers sample integrity, system operation, and patient history. Calls results to care givers. Report problems to medical technologists for resolution. Uses computer skills to evaluate data, document actions, control workflow: uses computer QA monitors (delta checks, previous results), enters comment (called to), pulls/clears pendings: reviews computer reports. Report problems to medical technologists for resolution. Using knowledge/investigation skills; minimizes corrected reports changing incorrect results that adversely affected (or had potential to adversely affect) patient care: clerical errors & technical errors should be reported to medical technologists for resolution. Assists management with the operations of Laboratory Services Section at assigned laboratory facility in accordance with overall system objectives. Utilizes the medical technologists as technical resource, identifies problems in process, systems. Performs weekly/monthly maintenance. Reviews QC statistics for system problems. Performs as-needed troubleshooting, minimizing the need for urgent or unneeded repair visits. Report problems to medical technologists for resolution. Uses supplies, tools, and equipment efficiently, minimizing department expenses Avoids urgent supply requests and minimizes supply loss due to expiration, inventories and/or notifies appropriate person of shortages or submits orders, properly receives and stores supplies Assists management with HR/administrative duties; provides feedback for evaluations, hiring, counseling, and competency as requested. Complies with schedules and bench assignments. Ensures quality; maintains current procedures and evaluates/ implements new procedures; trains staff; participates in the MT/MLT student program, lectures, and clinical rotations; participates in the QA/QC programs; assists in regulatory inspections
