About our Children's Shelters

Many children begin life in the face of serious challenges. Instead of playing pretend and imagining grand adventures, unaccompanied children face perilous conditions alone as they travel to unfamiliar countries, leaving home and loved ones behind to escape war and violence. Our children's centers, operated through a grant from the Office of Refugee and Resettlement (ORR), provide safety, stability and wraparound services. We help children grow into adults who have received love and kindness, instead of only violence and chaos.

What You'll Do

The Medical Care, LVN is responsible for assisting with nursing services for Unaccompanied children (UC) in the Office of Refugee and Resettlement facility. Responsible to assist with the assessment, intake, and daily medical needs of the children during their stay at the facility. This position ensures adherence to Upbring policies, ORR standards, federal, state, and local regulatory requirements.

All Upbring Children's Shelters employees must comply with ORR's vaccination mandate.

All staff must be able to show proof of immunity to vaccine-preventable diseases transmitted by the respiratory route if working directly with unaccompanied children (UC). Medical and Religious exemptions may be requested after an offer of employment is accepted.

Work Standards
  • Provides group education on various safety and disease prevention topics to children
  • Ensures proper plan of care is implemented
  • Administer medication and treatment to UCs as prescribed or as needed in accordance with licensing standards and nursing practices
  • Coordinate medical appointments and follow through on medications and treatment as prescribed
  • Performs duties in a safe manner
  • Support and enforce infection-control policies and procedures
  • Participates and supports safety meetings, trainings, and goals
  • Ensures the safety and security of all UC and the safe operating conditions within area of responsibility
  • Tracks all UC Portal medical data and UC medical files, ensures proper immunization schedules are used in accordance with ORR, DHHS, and TVFC policies and procedures and ensures the timely reporting of medical incidents (e.g., SIRs, HHSC SIR reports)Maintains a clean and orderly work area
  • Other duties as assigned
Communication
  • Maintains medical case file with appropriate documentation in accordance with policies and procedures in accordance with HIPPA standards
  • Complete paperwork as relates to treatment plans

Teamwork
  • Assists with routine and daily medical needs of the UCs Refers UCs to site RN, physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner as needed for medical care and assist with the transfer to a specialist or hospital
  • Assists with the operation of the medical clinic
  • Work closely with mental health providers, case managers and licensed clinicians
  • Rotation of on-call duties

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Active and unrestricted Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) in the state
  • 1 year of experience in a clinical pediatric care setting
  • Ability to maintain a professional approach and build a rapport and trust with UC
  • Ability to multi-task, organize, and have attention to detail
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common medical reports
  • Bilingual in both English and Spanish (reading, writing, speaking)
  • Strong relationship management skills with the ability to work with team in a collaborative manner
  • Strong interpersonal, and people skills; ability to work and interact with diverse groups of people and handle stressful and emotional situations
Preferred Qualifications
  • 1 year of pediatric, adolescent and OBGYN patients experience
  • RN Certification/License

Physical Demands & Work Conditions
  • This position will require continuous viewing of a computer screen, sitting and standing for long periods of time and frequent walking
  • Requires the ability to safely perform movements, such as pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, kneeling, reaching, and lifting
  • Position works in a child facility and has constant exposure to children
  • Lift, push, pull, move up to 50 lbs.
