Position Summary

A leading healthcare provider in Suffolk County is seeking a Medical Assistant to support clinical, laboratory, and clerical functions across hospital ambulatory services, outpatient clinics, and laboratory settings. The role involves assisting physicians and nursing staff with patient care, prepping patients for exams and procedures, recording vital health information, and performing routine lab procedures such as phlebotomy and specimen handling. The Medical Assistant will also support front-desk and administrative operations, including appointment scheduling, data entry, and patient communication. This is a 12-month contract position with potential for hire.


Key Responsibilities

Clinical and Patient Support Activities

  • Escort patients to exam rooms and document clinical data such as medications, vital signs, and visit reasons in the patient record (electronic or paper).
  • Conduct basic screenings and measurements (e.g., height, weight, blood pressure, temperature, pulse, EKG).
  • Ensure exam rooms are fully stocked and clean between visits.
  • Prepare patients and rooms for exams or lab tests, assist during clinical procedures, and chaperone as necessary.
  • Answer basic patient inquiries regarding procedures and distribute educational materials.
  • Assist patients with mobility needs and accompany them to other departments as needed.
  • Process lab orders, collect and label specimens, and follow proper protocols for handling and disinfection of instruments.
  • Perform point-of-care testing (glucose, EKG) under clinical direction and notify supervising staff of abnormal results.
  • Adhere strictly to all hospital protocols including HIPAA, OSHA, infection control, and patient identification policies.
  • Promptly request assistance and equipment during emergency situations.
  • Refrain from duties involving clinical assessment, medical judgment, or advanced care responsibilities.

Administrative and Clerical Activities

  • Welcome and direct patients and visitors, ensuring a smooth patient flow.
  • Schedule and modify appointments, including lab work or return visits, and communicate all relevant instructions.
  • Answer and route incoming calls, take accurate messages, and contact appropriate departments or personnel as needed.
  • Address general patient questions about appointments or basic next steps.
  • Generate daily appointment and scheduling reports.
  • Monitor and maintain inventory of both medical and office supplies, using approved procurement procedures.

Role Characteristics

  • This is a non-supervisory position.
  • Clinical duties make up at least 50% of job responsibilities.
  • Work is performed under the supervision and direction of nursing and medical staff.
  • Requires strong communication, organization, and multi-tasking abilities in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Minimum Qualifications

On or before the date of filing your application, you must have:


Either 1: one year of full time experience performing clinical and clerical support activities in a health care setting.

Or 2: completion of a college, university, technical school or vocational school medical assistant program.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with EMR.
  • BLS or Heart Saver certification.
  • Current certification for Medical Assistant.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must be physically capable of safely executing the duties and responsibilities required of the position.
