We're looking for an experienced Mechanical Engineer with experience in ocean-based operations. The initial focus is on acoustics but will quickly expand to other modalities as well as to mobile systems. Responsibilities
Serve as the lead mechanical engineer in a growing team, requiring proficiency across multiple disciplines:
• Mechanical Design: Create and document mechanical systems using both analytical methods and engineering intuition. Optimize performance, reliability, cost, and compliance with technical requirements.
• Maritime & Submerged Systems: Design operator-focused systems built for durability and performance in maritime and underwater environments.
• CAD & Documentation: Produce mechanical CAD models, technical drawings, and maintaining version control and supporting documentation.
• Manufacturing Process Selection: Choose suitable manufacturing methods, prepare fabrication documentation, and refine designs for production.
• Additive Manufacturing: Design for 3D printing, optimize part geometry and strength, and define testing protocols for printed components.
• Prototype Fabrication: Build early-stage parts using various fabrication methods and support technicians as needed during peak demand.
• Prototyping & Troubleshooting: Assemble and evaluate functional prototypes, identify issues, and contribute to early production builds.
• Manufacturing Handoff: Develop process documentation and tooling to transition designs to scalable production by technicians.
• Operational Testing: Participate in bench and field testing of prototypes, including deployment in marine environments.
• Design Feedback Integration: Collaborate closely with assembly and field teams to incorporate real-world feedback into design iterations, enhancing system effectiveness and efficiency. Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, or a related field, with at least 5+ years of relevant professional experience (or 10+ years of highly applicable experience, including a minimum of 5 years in a design-focused role).
• Must have an active Secret security clearance and able to obtain a TS/SCI
• Experience designing for challenging operational environments, preferably involving exposure to marine or remote field conditions.
• Proficiency with standard mechanical engineering tools and workflows. SolidWorks experience is a plus, but not required if you can transition quickly.
• Strong hands-on skills in prototyping, testing, and iterating on mechanical designs-both in controlled settings and in dynamic, real-world environments.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills suited to fast-paced, collaborative engineering teams.
• Physically able to participate in field deployments, including tasks such as lifting, maneuvering in tight spaces, and performing fine manual work aboard small vessels. Desired Qualifications
• Experience operating in dynamic, field-based environments, particularly those involving small crafts or mobile platforms.
• Familiarity with uncrewed systems, such as aerial platforms or remote vehicles, is a plus but secondary to field experience in aquatic or offshore contexts.
