Virginia Beach, VA General Description:
Provides technical support and original design inputs for complex systems, specifically mechanical systems and subsystems. Applies system, hardware, and software knowledge, as applicable, to the development of new products from concept through production, and the redesign / modification of existing systems. Performs analyses and trade studies and provides technical input to specifications that support system and module design and enhancement. Evaluates and recommends options and alternatives for system and module level components. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides original design inputs to the development of mechanical engineering projects.
Supports investigations and engineering evaluations of highly complex projects and products.
Participates in the evaluation of vendor capabilities for providing the required level of performance of products and/or services.
Works with team members, including other engineering disciplines and program management, to transfer ideas into core product processes, facilitate / implement design ideas, and improve existing products.
Interacts with customers, vendors, engineers, production personnel and program management to successfully complete projects.
Provides contributions to both system level and module definition.
Contributes technical input to requirements documents and detailed specifications that define and allocate requirements to systems and system components.
Works with teams of highly skilled professionals to research, design and develop new and complex systems and architectures.
Considers approaches and techniques for rapid prototyping, full scale (production) development and test.
Participates in technical discussions to develop product ideas and resolve problems.
Participates in technical research to understand alternate approaches to a problem and / or technical issues. Provides justification and support of the merits of a proposed solution to senior staff members.
Contributes to design documents and concept papers consistent with project efforts for review by senior members of the technical staff.
Performs engineering calculations, analyses and simulations under direct supervision as required. Utilizes Computer-Aided Design tools to capture, document, and validate design artifacts where applicable.
Review drawings and technical papers for compliance with project / program requirements.
Able to work on multiple projects simultaneously. Works with cross-functional teams. Reports project status as needed to senior members of the technical staff.
Work Experience Requirements:
0-2 years mechanical engineering experience Educational Requirements (or equivalent):
BS/BA Mechanical Engineering or Engineering/Science Working Conditions:
This work is typically performed in an office environment, which requires normal safety precautions; work may require some physical effort in the handling of light materials, boxes, or equipment. Physical demands include the ability to lift and/or move 10-25 pounds. Essential Skills/Experience:
Ability to prepare and present technical information.
Experience and basic proficiency using Computer-Aided Design tools (e.g. Inventor, Pro/E, Rhino) and Finite Element Analysis software (e.g. ANSYS) as applicable.
Strong organizational skills.
Basic understanding of mechanical engineering principles; capability to work at an entry level, in multiple mechanical engineering related disciplines.
Ability to work both independently and in highly collaborative teams.
Ability to accurately articulate concepts, theories and system design attributes to technical team members.
Ability to acquire and maintain a DoD security clearance.
