Mechanical Designer

Location: San Jose, California

Overview:

As a Mechanical Designer, you will play a vital role in supporting the development and optimization of a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in San Jose, California. This role involves a combination of fieldwork and detailed design responsibilities, ensuring that all mechanical systems are implemented accurately and efficiently. You will collaborate closely with project engineers, coordinators, and construction trades to deliver precise and actionable design documentation. Your contributions will directly support the plant's production objectives and overall operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct regular site visits to assess existing field conditions and ensure the implementation of design aligns with project specifications and observational reports.
  • Coordinate with project engineers, project coordinators, construction trades, and other team members to ensure as-built drawings accurately reflect design intent and project goals.
  • Create and maintain clear, accurate, and comprehensive 2D drawing packages in accordance with site design standards.
  • Draft, verify, and update mechanical and chemical system plans, including piping layouts, equipment layouts, schedules, and control schematics.
  • Develop detailed piping plans, showing pipe routing, instrument and valve locations, and equipment placement.
  • Draft Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) that clearly illustrate system interactions and component relationships.
  • Produce flow diagrams for gas-side and water-side systems, including HVAC, hydronic systems, and fire protection.
  • Incorporate isometric views into design documents to support field installation and comprehension.
  • Provide custom installation details for complex project components.
  • Conduct punch-list walkthroughs on completed projects to confirm adherence to design intent and quality standards.
  • Support the design and development of new and existing products for cost reduction, manufacturability, warranty improvements, and design changes.
  • Participate in vendor evaluations and assist in product assessments.
  • Provide drafting support for details, vendor submittals, and perform drawing review, control, and updates required in the engineering of process systems, such as tank and vessel designs.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive CAD drafting/design experience in process systems.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and related drafting tools.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, particularly in piping and instrumentation systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
  • Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to visit and walk through active construction sites.
  • Ability to walk long distances, sit or stand for extended periods, bend, stoop, twist, crawl, climb ladders, work on catwalks, navigate small spaces, and lift/carry up to 25 lbs.

Authorization to Work:

  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
  • Must be able to pass a background check and drug screening.
