Core Duties, Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: • May perform any of the duties of the Shop Technician I
• Identify, troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair common defects in the mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems in a variety of vehicles and equipment
• Repair gasoline and diesel engine components, transmissions and drivetrains, heating and cooling systems, clutches, air brake systems, differentials, exhaust systems, ignition systems, fuel systems, and a variety of small engine driven equipment
• Perform scheduled and preventive maintenance and repair of fleet equipment
• Perform equipment inspections and tune ups
• Provide general maintenance support of a variety of tools and equipment
• Research and locate specialized parts, tools, and equipment; provide estimates of resources required including time and parts costs
• Operate a variety of test equipment; perform required testing and inspections in accordance with regulations and standards.
• Prepare logs, reports, work and supply orders using a Fleet Management Information System(FMIS) as required.
• Maintain an organized and clean work area
• Report to work on a regular and timely basis
• Adhere to all safety rules
• Other duties as assigned
Education and/or Experience: - Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate and either of the following:
- Two (2) years of Vocational Technical School Training/Post-Secondary Automotive or Diesel Mechanical Training and two years dealer-level or large fleet experience
- Four (4) years experience working as a skilled technician in a dealer-level or large fleet repair organization
Qualifications: Shop Technician II has all the qualifications described in the Shop Technician I specification plus the following qualifications:
• Broad knowledge of fleet equipment components, including interaction and operation
• Good knowledge of operating principles and mechanics of internal combustion engines
• Demonstrated ability to perform sustained, heavy, and precision work
• Trained and licensed to repair and maintain air brake systems
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor in inaccessible spaces
• Ability to operate diagnostic equipment
• Ability to maintain simple time and material records
• Ability to utilize computerized systems
• Ability to expertly diagnose issues based upon experience, analysis, and testing
• Ability to drive both automatic and standard transmission vehicles
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
• Valid Texas Class "A" or "B" Non-Commercial Driver's License
• Some positions within this classification will be required to possess a valid Texas Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of date of hire
• Some positions in this classification may be required to obtain additional licenses and certificates such as: Forklift Operators License, Department of Transportation Inspectors License, Air Conditioning Repair License, and Freon Recovery Certificate Employees in this classification will be eligible to promote to a Shop Technician III after 36 months experience as a Shop Technician II and after attaining the following ASE certifications:
• Obtain Master ASE Certification / Medium-Heavy Truck (T Series) Failure to maintain ASE certifications will result in loss of promotional step.
Physical Requirements: • Ability to obtain and maintain a Texas Non-Commercial Class "A" or "B" Driver's License
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Texas Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License
• Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds
• Frequent balancing, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crawling, reaching, handling, feeling, smalling, twisting, and reaching above shoulders
• Frequent operation of hand and foot controls
• Frequent sorting and filing of paperwork or parts
• Occasional sitting, forcefully grasping, and using the telephone
• Rarely perform desk based computer tasks, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), lie on creeper, write by hand, operate small equipment (blowers), lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh more than 50 pounds
Working Conditions: • Working environment is primarily indoors and occasionally outdoors, and in inclement weather
• May be exposed to the following: high voltage electricity, hazardous materials, flammable liquids, traffic, cramped work areas, excessive dust, weather/temperature extremes, cutting/chipping/grinding, damp/wet surfaces, snow/ice covered surfaces, insect bites, toxic fumes/vapors/odors, confined spaces, compressed gasses, high noise areas, and extreme heights
• May be required to work overtime, evenings and weekends, and holidays
• May be required to be on 24-hour standby and subject to callback
Pay Range - $40-$42 per hour, depending on experience.
