Mathematics Laboratory Director

Position Summary:

The Mathematics Laboratory Director will lead and provide a vision for the delivery of tutoring services in the Math lab with oversight of the daily operation of the lab. The Director will also provide supplemental support to the mathematics faculty through student reports, math software applications, and special projects designed to improve the education of students in the mathematics curriculum. The director will also be involved in working strategically with faculty and the department chair to identify and implement resources that will address student needs and aid in their academic progress in math. The director should understand best practices in mathematics support services and should participate in regular training and meetings to keep abreast of best practices.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

I. Tutors

  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise undergraduate peer tutors and graduate teaching assistants.
  • Train and support lab tutors in the use of appropriate tutoring strategies to improve student learning and understanding of math content.
  • Keep tutor records and data up to date, including tutor schedules and payroll functions.
  • Address student user questions or concerns and work to resolve any issues.

II. Reporting
  • Keep accurate records of the use of the math lab that includes numbers of students who use the lab and the services that they request. This data will be used to make changes or improvements to the operation of the lab. Report this data to the Department and to the Title III office as requested.
  • Attend the monthly department meeting and report to the department on the functioning of the lab and special projects.
  • Update Math Lab webpage with relevant resources and information
III. Department Support
  • Work with Spelman Technology Services (STS) to ensure the maintenance of all computers and printers in the Math Lab and electronic classrooms (Tapley 306 and 313).
  • Manage the purchase and installation of mathematics software for the math lab, the electronic classrooms and faculty offices.
  • Oversee the logistics of the math placement test that includes assisting with securing testing licenses as needed, setting up testing format, assigning and training proctors as needed and maintaining testing materials.
  • Oversee mathematics support services for summer online mathematics courses, summer programs, and placement testing.
  • Assist with SMAT 101: Intermediate Algebra as a course facilitator. Meet regularly with the lead course instructor to plan, develop, and organize instruction, facilitate use of software and data for the course, and assist with training and managing student peer instructors.
  • Serve as Instructor for one section of SMAT 101: Intermediate Algebra or SMAT 115: Precalculus I, per semester.
IV. Student Success
  • Collaborate with other units of the Student Success Program to promote and provide comprehensive academic support to students. Keep abreast of resources available within the Student Success Program across campus.
  • Along with faculty, identify, track, and provide intervention for students at-risk and develop remedies to address their academic support needs in math. This may include providing student specific interventions to address a student's particular need.
  • Address student questions and issues related to their mathematics preparedness and council them regarding their math placement and their academic progress in math.
  • May write or assist with writing grant proposals that support lab improvements and programing to enhance student success and may be involved with the implementation of programming.

Required Qualifications:

Master's degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education (preferred), or in a related field with knowledge of math content and of mathematics computer software is required. Candidates with one to two years of experience in a higher education setting, specifically in areas of academic support services and improving student success in mathematics will receive special consideration.
The duties of this position require excellent oral and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills. This position requires a willingness to work individually, and with faculty and staff, tutors, and students. Must be able to think strategically. Also, this position requires the ability to respond to questions with diplomacy. The duties of this position require the ability to write business correspondence and various reports plus the ability to effectively deliver presentations to faculty, staff, students and the general public.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the ability to perform advanced level computer skills using the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), and Publisher. This position also requires knowledge of math content up to Calculus II.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree in Mathematics Education (preferred).

Experience using some Math software packages such as LaTex, Matlab, Maple, etc. is preferred, but not required.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: talk, hear, walk, and use hands to handle and operate the computer and other office and lab equipment. The employee is frequently required to: stand and sit. The employee is occasionally required to: reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, and lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include the ability to adjust focus.
