Title: Managing Editor

Reportsto: Director of Publications and Research

Reporting to the Director of Publications and Research, the Managing Editor is responsible for overseeing editorial development and production of the CAS scientific journal Variance, CAS Monographs and other member-facing publications. The Managing Editor works with authors, reviewers, volunteer editorial staff, and external support services to ensure that the journal and other publications are delivered on time, within budget, and in conformance with CAS publishing standards. The Managing Editor oversees copyediting, supervises copy flow, and manages the production of research content.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Scope and Production
  • Oversee central editing function for the CAS journal Variance, CAS Monographs, and other publications, correcting errors of spelling, grammar, punctuation, and format, and conferring with editorial staff and authors in resolving questions of document files, content, organization, and presentation.
  • Check all manuscripts for completeness, references, tables, figures suitable for reproduction, legends, abstracts, permissions and copyright/permission to publish forms. Request author bios and photos.
  • Shepherd manuscripts through pre-production and production stages, tracking missing items, and coordinating author/editor corrections.
  • Track timelines for editorial production and ensure deadlines are met for all milestones in the editorial/production process.

Relationship Management and Leadership
  • Work with external support services (printers, designers, copyeditors, typesetters and other vendors) in the efficient and economical delivery of high-quality publications - beginning with the manuscript stage and maintaining oversight to the final product.
  • Track paper submissions through ScholarOne, the online manuscript portal, and assist authors and volunteer reviewers with ScholarOne as needed.
  • Support the work of the Monograph Task Force in the identification of topics and authors for future Monographs and exam syllabus material.
  • Ensure that all authors respect copyright law and advise authors when to seek permission to use copyrighted material.
  • Assist with developing reviewer guidelines, editorial rating criteria, and reviewer training materials, as well as expanding and revising editorial policy.
  • Assist in the promotion of Variance, Monographs, and other research publications when published (e.g., web announcements, social media).
  • Manage the prize process for Variance and Monographs.
  • Coordinate with Individual Research Grants Task Force and grant recipients on the development and submission of their research papers to Variance.
  • Enhance the reputation of Variance as a peer-reviewed journal among academic researchers (e.g., impact factor, scientific journal recognition).
  • Provide an annual report to the board of directors and periodic management reports to the Variance Editor in Chief and Director of Publications and Research.
  • Assist in planning and organizing of semiannual/annual editorial board meetings.
  • Provide editorial support to other staff members for ongoing projects such as CAS Examinations and special projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Experience and Qualifications
  1. Fully accredited four-year undergraduate degree in journalism, English, communications, publishing or technical writing.
  2. A minimum of three to five years of publishing experience to include extensive knowledge of substantive editing and proofreading techniques, and familiarity with layout and design.
  3. Association and nonprofit experience highly desirable.
  4. Knowledge of PC Windows applications including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator), and some knowledge of web-based project management/tracking software for publications.
  5. Excellent written and oral communications skills with ability to present critiques diplomatically to authors. General knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style is preferred as well as familiarity of Associated Press style.
  6. Strong project management skills with a proven ability to plan, track and perform multiple tasks, manage multiple priorities and maintain consistent attention to detail.
  7. Sufficient familiarity and experience with the specifications/bidding, printing and production processes of publications by external vendors.
  8. Familiarity with copyright law for managing permissions and advising authors.

Measure of Accountability

The accurate, timely, and economical production of the premier publication of the Casualty Actuarial Society should reflect CAS's commitment to being the preeminent journal for property/casualty actuarial science.

The Managing Editor may help, as needed, with other CAS publications, including but not limited to Actuarial Review, Future Fellows, E-Forum, CAS Research Papers, Research Briefs, Educative Statements, Study Notes, Foundations of Casualty Actuarial Science and other textbooks.
