We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Managing Attorney to oversee and lead the firm's legal operations and litigation team. The ideal candidate will have substantial experience in federal tax controversy matters, including audits, appeals, collection defense, and litigation, and possess proven leadership skills to mentor attorneys and support staff. The Managing Attorney will work closely with the Principal Attorney and play a pivotal role in ensuring high-quality legal representation, client satisfaction, and operational efficiency.Provide a summary of the role, what success in the position looks like, and how this role fits into the organization overall.
Responsibilities
- Manage and supervise attorneys, legal assistants, and administrative staff
- Monitor case progress, manage case assignments, and ensure deadlines are met
- Provide mentorship, training, and performance evaluations for junior attorneys and staff
- Oversee legal strategy and ensure the effective handling of federal tax controversy cases
- Review pleadings, briefs, and client correspondence to ensure accuracy and quality
- Maintain regular communication with clients to ensure satisfaction and transparency
- Identify opportunities for expanding client relationships and supporting firm growth
- Assist with firm marketing, public speaking, and outreach efforts in the tax community
- Develop and implement firm policies and procedures
- Assist with compliance efforts related to attorney licensing, ethics, and tax court admissions
- Help streamline internal systems for improved efficiency and performance
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
- Licensed and in good standing with the any state Bar
- Minimum 5 years of legal experience, with at least 3 years focused on federal tax controversy
- Admitted to practice before the U.S. Tax Court
- Demonstrated experience managing or supervising legal teams
- Excellent research, writing, and oral advocacy skills
- Strong organizational and time management abilities
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience working at or with the IRS (Chief Counsel or Appeals) or DOJ Tax Division
- LLM in Taxation or Certified Public Accountant
- Working knowledge of tax procedure, administrative law, and federal court rules
- Strong understanding of accounting principles and tax returns
