Community Servings' mission is to actively engage the community to provide medically tailored, nutritious, scratch-made meals to chronically and critically ill individuals and their families. In addition, we are committed to prioritizing racial and economic justice and health equity in all our programs and business practices.
We are a dynamic and fast-growing agency at the forefront of the "Food is Medicine" field, providing over 1M medically tailored meals annually to clients and their families experiencing illness and food insecurity in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. In addition, our work strongly focuses on supporting the regional local food system, delivering high-quality nutrition education to the community, and hosting an on-site food-service workforce development program. Over the past 34 years, the agency has provided 13M+ free, scratch-made meals.
The Manager of Volunteer Services is responsible for managing the daily operations of a robust Volunteer Program that includes planning, organizing and directing the recruitment, training, retention and utilization of volunteers. Additionally, this position is responsible for collaborating with all departments to ensure that volunteer needs are being met across the agency, including kitchen, special events, delivery and holiday volunteers. The position is an integral part of the operations of the agency and must be proactive in assessing and matching department needs with volunteer services.
This is an in-person position with an expectation of working in both of our Jamaica Plain and Mansfield locations. Primary Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Manages the Volunteer Coordinator role
- Manages the volunteer database, volunteer tracking and analyzes data for internal reporting
- Manages the Kitchen Volunteer, Corporate Volunteer, Delivery Volunteer programs.
Recruitment
- Manages scheduling and confirmation of bookings for both groups and individual volunteers
- Recruits' volunteers from new and existing sources
- Maintains, fosters and builds relationships with collaborative organizations to grow volunteer base
- Designs and ensures implementation of outreach strategies
- Leads community outreach efforts and is a champion of volunteerism at Community Servings, more specifically identifying new sources of volunteers
- Develops new volunteer engagement activities and retention initiatives.
- Appropriately manages all volunteer inquiries with a focus on excellent customer service
- Anticipates and plans for seasonal shifts in volunteer recruitment and kitchen needs
- Develops and maintains a system of ongoing appreciation and recognition for volunteers
- Creates opportunities for volunteers of all ability levels to participate in Community Servings' work
Coordination & Communication
- Works collaboratively and closely with the Packaging Kitchen Manager, Production Manager and Executive Chef to ensure a quality kitchen volunteer experience and also that kitchen volunteer needs are met
- Builds and maintains effective communication among volunteers and staff
- Designs, adjusts and conducts group and individual volunteer orientations
- Works closely with the Development Department to identify volunteers and corporate volunteer groups to be cultivated for philanthropy
- Work closely with Communications Team to include volunteer recruitment needs in agency newsletters, social media posts, website and other communications
- Strategically plans how to leverage volunteers to increase impact, expand program reach
General
- Assists in other program areas on request
- Other duties as assigned by Senior Director of Programs

- Must be able to work independently, collaborate with colleagues and build relationships with partner organizations to increase Community Servings visibility in the community.
- Proficient in Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word and SalesForce
- Strong project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Must be a self-starter with strong organizational and follow up skills.
- Bi-lingual speaking ability (e.g. Spanish) is a plus.
- Public speaking experience
Education/Experience Minimum of a Bachelor's degree and at least 2 years of experience in the area of volunteer management/recruitment or equivalent combination of education and experience
Supervisory Responsibilities Directly supervise the Volunteer Coordinator, volunteers, and volunteer team interns.
