Manager of Instruments & Accessories, Robotic Tool Development

Our client is an innovative, venture capital funded medical device startup headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area. Their robot aims to disrupt flexible endoscopy and set a new standard in outcomes for decades to come.


POSITION SUMMARY: In this role you will be responsible for leading the development of customized robotically controlled tools for the next generation endoluminal robotic system. This role is a blend ofhands-on development engineer and program & vendor management. You'll work closely with the robotic hardware, develop relationships with contract manufacturers and partners, and drive development of custom multi degree of freedom tools. You'll drive prototypes into verification ready designs and into product launch. This role requires an effective and proactive leader to drive manufacturing and partnership strategy and to ensure alignment with project goals.

ESSENTIAL CANDIDATE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with cross-functional teams to determine and articulate design requirements for a suite of robotic endoluminal tools.
  • Mechanical design and integration of custom tool handles for flexible robotic instrument portfolio.
  • Create and maintain Solidworks CAD models, define specifications and create detailed drawings per good GD&T.
  • Perform material & tool construction tradeoffs to evaluate solutions that best meet the performance requirements for the system
  • Working with leadership to develop the strategic development approach for tools development and supply chain.
  • Manage partnerships to effectively execute the end-to-end design and development of robotic endoluminal tools including design handoff, integration, performance and sterility verification on and off system.
  • Drive the development of specifications, requirements, risk analysis, test methods and protocols through formal verification to ensure functionality, safety and efficacy of design.
  • Work well both independently and as part of a fast-moving, collaborative team.
  • Work closely with colleagues to brainstorm, collaborate, and share knowledge, demonstrating a team forward mentality with honest work ethic.
  • Have superb organizational and communication skills.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:

  • B.S. or M.S. in Engineering with 5-7 years experience.
  • 4+ years of work experience as a hands-on mechanical engineer
  • Proven experience in mechanical design and analysis including modeling tolerance stacks, static and dynamic analysis, FEA.
  • Experience in the design and development of disposable tools with external or internal partners, including design transfer and partner/vendor management.
  • Experience designing for injection molding and working with suppliers.
  • Understanding of tool construction for flexible tools, endoscopy, catheters, etc
  • Demonstrated experience in design control, risk management, and regulatory compliance across industries such as medical devices, automotive, aerospace.
  • Knowledge of plastic and metal part manufacturing techniques and dFM/dFA
  • Experience designing for high volume production and driving products from concept to production working with external vendors and partners.
