Job Summary The Manager of Cloud Architecture is responsible for leading the strategy, design, and governance of Michigan Medicine's public cloud environments. This role ensures that cloud solutions are scalable, secure, cost-efficient, and aligned with organizational goals, supporting clinical, research, and administrative functions.
Reporting to the Director of Data Center and Cloud Architecture, the Manager of Cloud Architecture provides technical leadership and architectural direction for cloud adoption, migration, and optimization initiatives. This includes overseeing the design of cloud-native architectures, hybrid cloud solutions, and cloud governance frameworks. The Manager collaborates closely with security, networking, application, and infrastructure teams to ensure seamless cloud integration while maintaining high availability, performance, and compliance with industry regulations (HIPAA, NIST, etc.).
The Cloud Center of Excellence (CcoE) at Michigan Medicine is a strategic division dedicated to driving cloud adoption, governance, and operational excellence across the organization. The CcoE serves as the central hub for cloud expertise, ensuring the secure, efficient, and scalable use of cloud technologies to support clinical, research, and administrative initiatives.
With a focus on innovation, best practices, and compliance, the CcoE is responsible for establishing cloud strategies, architecture standards, and operational frameworks that align with the institution's mission. The division collaborates closely with IT, security, and business stakeholders to optimize cloud environments, enabling high-performance computing, data analytics, and mission-critical applications including the management and optimization of Epic HER and Sectra PACS in the public cloud.
By fostering a culture of continuous improvement, automation, and cloud-native solutions, the CcoE ensures that Michigan Medicine remains at the forefront of digital transformation, delivering reliable, cost-effective, and cutting-edge cloud services that enhance patient care, research advancements, and operational efficiencies.
Responsibilities Cloud Strategy and Architecture:
- Develop and implement a strategic roadmap for cloud architecture, ensuring alignment with Michigan Medicine's IT and business objectives.
- Define cloud architecture standards, best practices, and governance frameworks to ensure consistency, reliability, and security.
- Lead the design and architecture of private and public cloud solutions, optimizing performance, scalability, and cost efficiency.
- Work closely with on-premise infrastructure teams to design hybrid cloud solutions that enable a smooth transition of workloads from data centers to the cloud.
Cloud Governance and Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with security policies, HIPAA, NIST, and other regulatory frameworks governing cloud environments.
- Implement cloud security best practices, including identity and access management (IAM), encryption, logging, and threat detection.
- Develop cost management strategies, optimizing cloud resources through automation and continuous monitoring.
- Establish cloud disaster recovery and business continuity plans to ensure high availability and resilience.
Solution Design and Implementation:
- Collaborate with application development, DevOps, and IT operations teams to design and implement cloud-native and containerized workloads.
- Provide technical leadership on cloud migrations, ensuring a seamless transition from on-premise to cloud platforms.
- Oversee the adoption of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and automation tools (Terraform, Ansible, etc.) to improve cloud efficiency and consistency.
- Optimize multi-cloud and hybrid cloud architectures to support enterprise applications and research computing needs.
Team Leadership and Collaboration:
- Lead and mentor a team of cloud architects, providing technical direction, professional development, and performance management.
- Collaborate with security, networking, and application teams to ensure cloud strategies are effectively integrated across the IT ecosystem.
- Act as a cloud subject matter expert (SME) to IT leadership, providing recommendations on emerging cloud technologies and trends.
- Engage with vendors and cloud service providers (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) to evaluate new solutions and manage service-level agreements (SLAs).
Required Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or related field.
- 7 to 10 years of increasingly responsible experience in the operation and management of IT services.
- 5 years in a managerial/supervisory or team lead role overseeing 5 or more direct reports
- Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Proven expertise in public cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and cloud-native services.
- Strong experience with private cloud and hybrid cloud models, including cloud integration with on-premise data centers.
- Experience with cloud security, identity and access management (IAM), and regulatory compliance.
Desired Qualifications - Master's degree preferred.
- In-depth knowledge of containerization and orchestration technologies (OpenShift, Kubernetes, Docker).
- Strong proficiency in Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and automation frameworks (Terraform, Ansible, etc.).
- Cloud certifications (AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Azure Solutions Architect Expert, Google Professional Cloud Architect).
- Experience with DevOps and CI/CD pipelines for cloud deployments.
- Knowledge of machine learning, AI, or big data services in the cloud.
